JMG Warmachine Tournament IV (Lord Nope Hexeris)

So there was this Warmachine Tournament.

I had two lists for this tournament, but played only one.

[Theme] Masters of War
Lord Tyrant Hexeris
- Agonizer [6]
- Archidon [10]
- Tiberion [22]
- Titan Gladiator [15]
Feralgeist [2]
Cataphract Cetrati (max) [18] + Tyrant Vorkesh [0(6)]
Legends of Halaak [8]
Paingiver Beast Handlers (min) [5]
Praetorian Swordsmen (max) [13] + Praetorian Swordsman Officer & Standard [4]
Tyrant Commander & Standard Bearer [0(6)]

First game was against Circle of Orboros, Krueger1.

Primaled Ghetorix fails to take out Tiberion, which results in a dead Ghetorix. Bloodtrackers had Legends of Halaak as their prey target, and I tried to move them to other side of the board. This was when I learned about the new minifeat that allows to pick a new Prey target. Oh well. At least Bloodtrackers were rolling exceptionally low damage rolls against them.

Hexeris' feat gave me, what, two or three extra kills in this game. So yay for that. I can already give a spoiler: they were the only kills I got with Dark Dominion during whole tournament.

Then Primaled Warpwolf Stalker destroyed Tiberion and lowered Titan Gladiator down to one hit box remaining. Krueger shot that one off. I was down to Archidon in my heavy warbeast department, and it was somewhere completely off.

I had gained a good lead in scenario game, but losing both serious heavies might change that.

Time started to be short for both players, which resulted in a panicking Krueger flying to my rectangular zone. But he had Def 17 - what was I to do?

I tried to snatch the last remaining control point, but just couldn't clear the circular zone on right. And over-excited I had also brought Archidon to full Fury.

Loki took off Agonizer, so Hexeris had no transfer targets. Krueger charges in and attempts to assassinate Hexeris, but fails to do so. Hexeris had cast Parasite on Krueger, and it was this +1 ARM that saved Hexeris. Shortly after opponent ran out of clock.

A close victory for Hexeris. But little did I know, yet...

Second game was against Grymkin.

It was a good game against The Heretic.

I saw an opportunity to score two scenario points, but this relied on hitting a MAT 8 attack against DEF 13. Failed, of course. So that was only one point for me.

My single greatest mistake was bringing a shield-walled unit of Cetrati within charge range of Skin & Moans. They were obliterated, and I didn't even get the scenario point.

Tiberion survived like a champ against Cage Rattler with Fury, and against another Cage Rattler that had no Fury. Just for the sake of it, when last Cage Rattler died Feralgeist jumped in.

I lost my lead of 3 control points in one round, and that decided the game for me. I only could try to grind up some control points for tiebreakers. But Archidon failed to repeat it's performance, and did next to no damage to enemy objective.

Hexeris stood right next to Skin & Moans full on corpses, and had no Fury.

This was something even Hexeris could not endure. Lost.

Third game was against Circle of Orboros, and again against Krueger1.

I almost lost on top of 2A. Storm Raptor is a horrifying assassination tool. Saving grace here was Tiberion's Immovable Object. Krueger attempted to throw Tiberion to Hexeris with a Tornado. Otherwise those resources could have gone to killing Hexeris.

My warcaster almost died to electro leaps. And lastly Lord of the Feast threw it's bird at something, and Tiberion used shield guard. But thanks to new and improved reach of 2", Lord was easily within range of Hexeris. But miraculously Hexeris survived - with three hit boxes to boot!

This was devastating for Circle player, and he lined every warbeast at his disposal to protect Krueger.

However, thanks to Krueger's feat and such, I could only destroy two Warpwolves and Storm Raptor, and my warcaster was at two hit boxes remaining - he had cut himself to gain one fury point.

I was prepared to lose now. Tiberion was at full Fury, so was not an eligible transfer target. Archidon died, but at least gave two extra fury points for Hexeris by doing so.

Primaled Shadowhorn Satyr did it's shenanigans and came to finish off Hexeris.

This cost me Titan Gladiator, but - how can it be? Hexeris was alive.

Had Combo-Smite brought Gorax to Krueger, I would have attempted to kill him. But Gorax moved only half an inch, which was not enough to knock Circle warlock over. So I just killed the Shadowhorn Satyr and Warpwolf Stalker.

I thought I was safe, but then Krueger flies closer and casts a Tornado at Hexeris. It hits and slams Hexeris to wall, meaning POW 13 + 4d6 damage roll or something like that.

I only had Agonizer as transfer target. Opponent hoped high enough damage roll that overspill damage would kill Hexeris, but it left him standing with one hit box remaining.

I'd prefer winning where it would feel like I played well, but I have to say game was hilariously exciting. Surviving against such odds has a certain tingling sensation in it, but really. Hexeris got lucky big time here.

Fourth game was... against Circle of Orboros. I got to play against Kaya3. And what a terrifying game it was.

I had my moment on the right sided rectangular zone, where I killed a griffon or two. Praetorian Swordsmen cleared the flag scoring blackclad. But other than that, nothing else worked - and opponent had excessively high damage rolls against Tiberion. Who died.

Also, against Titan Gladiator. Who died.

Only Cataphract Cetrati were performing well - they were passing Tough roll in such a way that it probably made the average from all of these game about right. I had not been passing those rolls earlier, but here I passed more than I failed.

But hey, with only an Agonizer I was facing five heavy warbeasts. I had pretty much given up here, and left Hexeris quite there in the open. Not exactly suicidal, but not trying to protect himself either.

Kaya cleared any free strikes that a nearby Gnarlhorn Satyr would've had to take. Then Circle filled up the Synergy chain, and Gnarlhorn Satyr launched itself against Hexeris, who only had Agonizer for transfers.

Those rolls, though.

The goat missed pretty much every attack. One attack wrecked Agonizer's spirit. Another attack Hexeris took in. Hexeris had at least seven damage boxes left after MAT 9, P+S 19 or something like that Satyr had had it's moment with him. And Kaya was withing charge range of Hexeris.

Legends of Halaak combo-smited Gnarlhorn away so it wouldn't get a free strike against Hexeris. The Legend with Naginata dealt some 10 points of damage to Kaya, which were transfered away.

Then Hexeris charges in and kills Kaya.

Just.

What.

Is.

This.

And I even placed third in the tournament.

Personally, this has to be the most absurd tournament I have ever attended when it comes to probabilities.

Or maybe this was my Skorne collection's way of saying: "Please play more with us!"

Masters of Steel

So, I managed to get a grand total of one practice game for last Saturday's warmachine tournament.

I would be taking Skorne with Masters of War and Winds of Death.

My list was:

[Theme] Masters of War
Lord Tyrant Hexeris [+28]
- Agonizer [6]
- Archidon [10]
- Tiberion [22]
- Titan Gladiator [15]
- Aptimus Marketh [5]
Feralgeist [2]
Cataphract Cetrati (max) [18]
Legends of Halaak [8]
Paingiver Beast Handlers (min) [5]
Praetorian Swordsmen (max) [13]
- Praetorian Swordsman Officer & Standard [4]
Tyrant Commander & Standard Bearer [0(6)]

And yup, it's illegal. I accidentally fielded Beast Handler unit that had been forgotten during list construction. Now, I can't feel too guilty over this because I also have unused choice of free Command Attachment or Tyrant Commander unit.

I noticed how Aptimus Marketh was rather useless in this list, as he was only able to cast Sunder Spirit. So he'd have to go at least.

Opponent had (probably):

[Theme] Legion of Steel
Koldun Kommander Aleksandra Zerkova [+28]
- Devastator [14]
- Juggernaut [13]
Iron Fang Kovnik [0(4)]
Kapitan Sofya Skirova [0(5)]
Ragman [4]
Uhlan Kovnik Markov [7]
Great Bears of the Gallowswood [9]
Iron Fang Pikemen (max) [15]
- Iron Fang Pikemen Officer & Standard [0(4)]
Iron Fang Pikemen (max) [15]
- Iron Fang Pikemen Officer & Standard [4]
Iron Fang Uhlans (max) [20]

I didn't know what to do. As I'd be pretty much forced to take the alpha strike, I decided to rush Tiberion to what looked like a nice bottleneck to me. But all manner of filthy Cryx tricks made by Zerkova managed to navigate most of Khador army to attack the character beast. Well, at least it did take some resources to remove - unit of Iron Fang Pikemen, Sofya Skirova or Iron Fang kovnik, Juggernaut and Great Bears of Gallowswood.

Legends of Halaak were pretty much wasted, as opponent had Ghost Walk to make them immune to free strikes.

I did get good mileage out of Hexeris' feat - it removed quite a few pikemen.

Feat cleared path for Titan Gladiator to attack Juggernaut, but it didn't amount to much.

I had started dragging behind on scenario points and eventually lost the scenario game. I don't remember how I actually lost - maybe Hexeris got killed somehow. But a loss it was.

Time Flies By at the Sanurinn Pool

Year 16 hunt & showdown

A god mourns.

And is causing quite a racket in doing so. Eager to prove herself worthy of Ralala's legacy, Sacrala assembles a hunting party without sacrificing a thought as to why and how misery drove god insane. Blinded by greed and a vague semblance of misguided honor, these people seek only to prove themselves in a fight.

Sacrala, Larona, Spenaccio and Halyran arm themselves and enter the darkness with a craving for blood.

In their limitless arrogance they just laugh off an enormous sphinx they pass by. It mocks the survivors just by it sheer mass - how puny the humans are. If here was a lesson to be learned, not even Sacrala with her Understanding of 6 decided to see it. Maybe they hid their fear this way.

Banquet trees don't waken any sense of respect in survivors. Just before they're about to have a meal along with eating competitions and whatnot, Larona attempts to write her name to the trunk. This draws blood and fruits sour instantly. A moment of silence followed by nervous laughter.

Spenaccio leads survivors to chase a silver bug that's supposed to lead them to their prey. It's residing in a cave with opening just like a mouth. When all survivors enter, the mouth closes and opens rapidly. Survivors start taking brain damage, their sense of humour slowly finding it difficult to disregard all these startling events. Survivors start to realize the celestial nature of their quarry.

Survivors take a break, gathering some acanthus plants that are growing in moist soil wherever they currently were trekking. This break seems to take ages. _Ages_. Surroundings look a little hazy, out of place. Time is moving, they are not. Sacrala has encountered this before - things like this happen when phoenix passes by. Survivors close their eyes as it helps a little during time lapse. When they open their eyes, Lion God stands right next to them in all it's majestic appearances. Gazing yet not looking, it raises it's Golden Claw against Sacrala. This alarms survivors, and they quickly dash out of the creature's sights.

Halyran wounds it's expressionless face, praying his quixotic strength token away. That horrific face gazes him, while the god's body starts to move forward, grabbing Larona who happened to stand in it's way (with Amber Poleaxe.)

Sacrala has her whip dance on the divine flank and divine thighs of Lion God, possibly tickling it since it moves again - triggering another Amber Poleaxe roll. Both of which have failed. Spenaccio binds Sacrala's bleeding wounds, caused by whiplash effect of Lion God. To suffer whiplash while you lash with a whip. Ironic, isn't it?

Sorrowful, Lion God raises one of the Lion God statues into air and studies it in detail and seems to forget the presence of survivors. Spenaccio lines up to shoot a hollowpoint arrow at Lion God, but his hands are shaking from fear and he misses. There is something ominous in how the godly presence gazes the statue, heedless of the danger.

Holding high the statue of itself, Lion God lets loose first noises until now. It stats to speak in an unknown language, but the meaning of the words can be somehow felt. These holy utterances have every survivor in panic, and Larona notices how the words change her forever. She gains Ghostly Beauty fighting art.

Next Lion God walks to a giant stone face, and mourns while it trashes the stone face with it's cudgel statue. Spenaccio tries to shoot it with claw head arrow, but misses again.

Anger rises in god. It tosses the Lion God statue it is holding at Larona in god tantrum. Any confidence survivors (or even player) had is gone by now. Creature is unreachable, and Woeful Majesty is next AI card. Desperate matters call for desperate actions, and Halyran lunges from behind another Lion God statue. Divine Tail slaps a bleeding token on him, but attack deals damage. Thankfully. But wisdom potion reveals how trap card is coming next. Time to make sacrifices after Lion God pulverizes some terrain first.

Larona strikes with her so far useless amber poleaxe. It continues to be useless as she misses every attack. Lion God tosses her around like a rag doll, which only prepares her for the ultimate sacrifice. Gritting teeth, she takes another swing at her target. Again she misses. Alright then. Halyran, the most courageous one, has to take the Vengeance. Toppled pillar, into which Halyran is slammed, finally reveals the sinkhole.

Sacrala sees this as an opportunity to kill a god. Sometimes I just wonder...

Three hit locations. First I choose Petrified Ankle so that Sacrala would take a knockback. Because other reactions were rather horrible. Critical wound circumvented this. Oh dear. Next is Petrified Shoulder Blade, which would move Lion God forward to grab Halyran on wound. It would save Sacrala, though. But again a critical wound. Bloody hell. Sacrala's whip drives Lion God into terrifying frenzy. It grabs Sacrala and smashes her face to a lion god statue nearby. This kills her instantly.

... if it wouldn't have been for the Green Charm she was wearing. Too many exciting moments in such a short time. Even more exciting is that fourth card in the location deck is another trap. No. Noooo...

After these displays of power, Lion God speaks again in the foreign tongue. Larona, having earlier changed, broke into maniacal laughter this time. Lion God did not consider this an appropriate thing to do, and Larona received the priority target token. Next it raises another Lion God statue, and I rejoice when finally amber poleaxe inflicts the wound. Joy fell short when I realized that next hit location is Vengeance, there is now Cudgel in play and last card in AI deck is Holy Utterances. Unless I wound the monster next turn it's most likely game over. It would just repeat Holy Utterances until everyone is dead from brain trauma.

Larona with her un-trusty poleaxe closes in to trigger vengeance. She actually succeeded - but the vengeance was her downfall. Six damage to body location gave a severe injury, which rolls knocked down result. Then collision damage scores another body severe injury and she rolls a one. It's not the six damage that kills. It's the one. Well, Larona _was_ the priority target, after all, and had to pay for her sacrilege.

Halyran emboldens and overcharges himself and strikes Lion God. Just one wound would be enough to kill it. A sigh of relief, and a mournful triumph. Necromancer's Eye entered Sanurinn Pool, along with settlement even Phantom. Spenaccio finds the knowledge worm and carries it to safety.

Year 17

Spenaccio forms a strange bond with the knowledge worm and gains Phantom Friend fighting art. Everyone in the settlement has restless sleep.

Spiress is purified and Sacrala goes to nightmare training. Result is a point of accuracy. Which is not what I wanted, but I won't complain.

Chilons takes interest in the deafness and blindness of Spiduka, and tries some experimental techniques on her. This results in intracranial hemorrhage.

Possessed Drosel plays the heart flute, which results in one more dead survivor. Boldened by this courageous example Grissewan takes the flute from Drosel's cold, dead hands. And plays a note. That summons a powerful creature that might end Sanurinn Pool. A nemesis monster. Ghost walking, invulnerable phantom creature emerges from darkness to see who's playing tunes like this.

The Hand has arrived.

(I'm a little ashamed of abusing heart flute like this. I hope I'll pay for my sins and the cruel randomness of Kingdom Death keeps me humble even in astonishing settlement like this.)

Just as Lavias, Chiloresc, Daress and Spenaccio are about to confont this new threat Grissewan had thoughtlessly unleashed, the newly acquired knowledge worm squirms. Lavias is the last person to prepare his bow and dagger in War Room, where knowledge worm had also been stored as a kind of a trophy. Lavias takes a closer look what is happening to this wondrous worm, and this is where it forces itself down Lavias' throat. Lavias has become the Necromancer now.

Secretly Chiloresc dons the God Mask, which has been held in reverence for as long as anyone remembers. Well, maybe Spiduka or Ghorum still remembers times it had been put to use.

Spenaccio feeds some acanthus plants to his Phantom Friend.

The Hand is very impressed by survivors. Showdown was actually boring, because it was such an overkill. Lavias scored a wound with his bow, gaining a proficiency from that. Greatest setback was when Daress missed all attacks he made during showdown, so he was not able to train axe proficiency.

Daress and Chiloresc received the 7+ result from Applause. So I guess I can deal with not gaining +1 axe proficiency. Lavias gained a point of strength and Spenaccio had to spend survival or die from shock.

Chiloresc, who had worn God Mask received purpose from the Hand's blessing. It was about time, though, since he's been a drifter without a fate or meaningful existence.

The Hand grabs Grissewan with him before leaving the settlement. Perhaps the Hand enjoyed his play so much that wanted to include Grissewan in it's court.

With the extra endeavor from death of Grissewan, Lavias makes a plan in War Room - to hunt an ancient Screaming Antelope.

Year 17 hunt & showdown

Daress, Chiloresc, Lavias and Spenaccio depart for the hunt. First hunt event was Living Stone - a giant that carried survivors right to the showdown. Now wasn't that hunt plan just useful.

Now, I noticed that Antelope has this legendary horn trait card already in play. And soon enough survivors found out the tick infestation that the antelope has. I had not planned for Toughness 15 antelope.

Chiloresc was devoured quite a few times during showdown. Praying to the Sun did ease getting Chiloresc out from antelope's tummy, but still it was a horrifying fight.

Severe injury rolls started piling up. Miraculously, though, only Spenaccio breaks his ribs before Halyran deals the killing blow. Not a moment too soon.

Year 18

Settlement event is Glossolalia, and Chiloresc starts to babble incessantly. Considering he'd just been eaten by and elder antelope (twice), it's no wonder he loses his mind. But he's being driven by the need to explain what he has realized, and so he innovates Pictographs for the settlement.

But no-one gets their point. Chiloresc eats Black Lichen and imagines himself as the screaming antelope.

Chilons has second trepanning session for Spiduka, which damages her brain in an advantageous was, curing her narcissism.

Spenaccio sleeps broken rib off and is purified.

A second Phoenix has been sighted and survivors consider it a threat that must be either scared off or killed outright.

Year 18 hunt and showdown:

First survivors come across a field full of mature acanthus plants, fertilized by multicoloured poop. Chiloresc picks some acanthus with his bone sickle, but nobody knew just how fertile these fields actually were. There were also some extraordinary weeds that grew genitals back to Chiloresc and, well, resuscitated all of Halyran's future children. Curiously enough they had been all been killed the last time Halyran was hunting Phoenix.

Bad weather interrupts the hunt, and survivors take cover in a cave. On the walls there are ominous pictures that make a whole lot more sense now that settlement has innovated Pictographs. Chiloresc tries to explain his findings enthusiastically, but just babbles nonsense and gains some insanity. Lavias and Halyran find new ways to fight monsters.

They may have been hiding for quite a long time, for ages seem to have unmade the gorn horn Daress had carried with him. Inside the cave survivors hear a distant clanging sound, and go to check the origins. Nearing the sound, there are human corpses littered through the passage way. Enormous, cyclopean knight lops off Chiloresc's ear and leaves steel shield and sword for survivors.

Survivors try to follow the knight, but only find an opening to Overwhelming Darkness. Chiloresc gains Leader fighting art. Yet no-one understands what he says.

After pushing through network of tunnels, survivors arrive on a lush meadow that's plagued by such strong winds that it is difficult to walk forward. Herb and mineral gatherings happened here, as well as sonorous rest before showdown began.

Mighty Phoenix starts by rubbing in the difference between humans and creature such as it is. While Halyran and Daress do fine work in attacking the bird of time, hit locations show an upcoming time stop.

Chiloresc is pulled inside the bird. Which makes me wonder. I mean, Chiloresc has now been inside the Screaming Antelope and the Phoenix. What can it be like, to see the monster really from the inside? Maybe this is what he wants to say with his endless babbling.

Last two cards in the AI deck are Pitying Sigh and Analtorium, which makes for a disturbing mental image. Every time Phoenix pulls a survivor inside it's anal cavity, it sighs how pathetic these little creatures are. But continues to pull them inside anyway.

But that did not come to be. Once Chiloresc came back to this world, he killed the Phoenix with his rib blade.

This opened up the third eye for Halyran. I believe the only survivor in any settlement that has had both See the Truth and White Secret trigger. As the Phoenix was about to die, Halyran's consciousness merged with that of the time bird. It was now that Halyran could sense secret paths that were hidden in plain sight. However, as it was the moment of Phoenix's death, Halyran also developed a phobia towards sharp objects such as rib blades. Halyran had become leyline walker from remembering a secret nobody had ever told him.

Year 19

Settlement event is Season of the Spiderling

Sacrala, Spenaccio, Halyran and Daronas fight incoming spiderlings. While Spenaccio and Halyran are busy eating spiders, Sacrala confuses Rablirucsen for a new encounter with Manhunter. Thus, Rablirucsen dies. But thanks to Rabli's death, there are now eight endeavors to spend.

Spenaccio and Spiounas enter a beam of light, dipping in sun for +1 courage and understanding each.

Spiress and Resculachu receive the Sun Eater fighting art and become partners.

Whatever happened in the beam of light had Spenaccio Bulvans and Spiounas Bulvans to have twins. End of Darksilk lineage, I suppose. Unar and Klenovar are twin brothers. Another one was almost strangled by the life string, so he was born with Lure Epilepsy fightning art

Because there are now enough Sun Eaters and life strings available, settlement starts to prepare to give birth for a new promise, completely one of their own with no relation to the legacy or Ralala.

Spiress and Resculachu rename themselves as Brightsilk family and receive one Child of the Sun, who is immediately purified. Umbilical symbiosis turns her into a refracting warrior of the sun, Falves Brightsilk. And as has been the case, babies are the best forbidden dancers. Falves danced and succeeded, though not without epiphany reroll.

Chilons is still drilling through Spiduka's skull, this time curing intracranial hemorrhage she had inflicted in the first place.

Frohlagodhen plays a tune with Heart Flute, which takes her re-roll away but succeeds. Another far too easy victory I believe, as this time survivors are face-to-face with a level 1 Butcher.

Daress, Chiloresc, Lavias and Daronas make short work out of the masked monster that arrived from darkness. Butcher did give a little fright when first card he drew was Infinite Kick, and soon enough Lantern Frenzy targeted Chiloresc, who had the worst defensive capabilities. Chiloresc had put on the God Mask again, and Butcher recognised something in that mask that he wanted to destroy. However, Butcher stood his ground for three round before falling to the axe of Daress. Lavias even received Legendary Lungs from this encounter.

Year 19 hunt & showdown

Time keeps repeating itself somehow and settlement realizes they've been stuck in a time loop. To free themselves Daress, Chiloresc, Lavias and Daronas set out to kill the Phoenix that is causing this. Incidentally it's the same Phoenix they've already hunted - what is happening?

Many a thing has been falling down from the sky during this campaign. Gifts to some, filth to another. Survivors find themselves under a constant rain of disgusting muck. Good thing that settlement is mostly underground, because events like these must be causing diseases or poisonings. It's literally poop that is raining.

Daress and Daronas take the worst of it. Daress takes a heavy hit to arms, and Daronas collects some muculent droppings.

Hunters pass some saliva pools, but are able to mask the smell. Chiloresc, as helpful as he is indecipherable, drops Cat Fang Knife to one of the pool, which dissolves it into Elder Cat Teeth.

Next survivors see themselves returning from the hunt, victorious. But confusion fills their mind as they realize they're trying to hunt the beast. Yet they are older.

Finally survivors find settlement ruins and for a moment darkest dread overwhelms everyone - is it their settlement? No, but Daress is puzzled. It bears a striking resemblance to the settlement he had fled all those years ago. But here it is, still smoldering from the destruction as if it had happened only hours before.

Time has been broken. Daress takes a stroll in the ruins, trying to find clues if time has really been broken. And answer comes when he finds a person trapped in the ruins, still alive - and a person Daress had known during his earlier life. They rescue Cratera, but the darkness is overwhelming. They are in grave danger of vanishing from existence.

A nice little meadow offers a herb gathering moment for survivors, as well as some sonorous rest. During rest an enormous gust of wind threatens to push hunters back from where they came, but it's merely a slight discomfort. They arrive at their prey, which causes lantern flame to ripple as if smothering.

And they have already seen themselves returning victorious and even if they don't remember it, they can predict every move Phoenix is about to do. This results in ten wounds during first round.

Phoenix unspeaks Daronas' name and releases a pitying sigh. Look at these silly humans here, killing me. Everyone but the nameless person laughs at this.

A wounding hit from Lavias sent the Phoenix to materialize at the furthest table edge from him, which had the Phoenix both sigh at the useless survivors again, then completely disdain them as they all were out of it's field of view.

Phoenix seemed to ignore survivors throughout the fight. It ignored them even as it died, death blow made by Daress.

Chiloresc was utterly disturbed by this and plucked out his own eye, took it in his hand and extended his arm, as if looking through the detached eye. Before passing out he offered the eye to the nameless person, who gratefully accepted, gaining Timeless Eye fighting art.

Daress, with one point away from Seeing the Truth and remembering the white secret couldn't help but wonder if Phoenix did all this on purpose.

Acid Storm accompanies hunters back home, which is a relief for me - I don't have to feel bad about abusing Heart Flute now, as Acid Storm prevents music endeavors.

Year 20

Acid Storm brings tidings from the Sun itself. Maybe it's the bad weather that causes the Sun to cough up in such a violent manner? Lavias retrieves God's String that fell from the sky along with massive amounth of liquid.

Chilons continues to drill through Spiduka's skull, damaging the brain permanently. Spiduka gain Infinite Lives fighting art, and can't remember her name any more. For now she thinks it might have been Spidunta.

Spidunta tries to learn something from this nightmare, but fails to do so.

Spenaccio and Spiounas have another pair of twins, Lyrna and Parkara. Birth of Parkara finally awoke Ghorum from his crystallized slumber - he had heard someone speak with a language he knew so well. Another Orator of Death.

Falves, refracting Warrior of the Sun sits inside a boiling pool for a year and gains Hellfire secret fighting art. Settlement innovates Shadow Dancing.

Chiloresc is a distressing figure, yet he seems to have some special power. And for sure he has a lot to tell. In an hopeful attempt to cure Chiloresc from his troublesome ailment, settlement performs Purification Ritual on him. Chiloresc is purified, but babbling remains.

Seeds of envy have been planted when Klenovar Bulvans was purified, but his twin brother Unar was not.

And the further the settlement survives, the more there is to write into these blog entries. So I'm discontinuing the 5-year span I've been using and give these four years here.

Next hunt shall be White Lion. I wasn't lucky enough to receive Phoenix Whiskers, but I did get Shimmering Halo. So one extra Elder Cat Teeth allows settlement to craft Prism Mace.

Too Long Years

This bird manipulates time.

Almost two years it has been roosting on my painting desk (as if I had a dedicated desk for that...) waiting to be born before being able to reborn.

When I first received this model as a Christmas gift from a person very dear to me, I decided to paint this phoenix to the best of my ability. Because I haven't been doing that very much. Always taking shortcuts and "letting it be" when things didn't go as planned. But here I wanted to give all I had when it comes to painting, and this is what came up.

I'm quite satisfied with the skin. It looks nice from a distance, and even better up close. Feathers, on the other hand, did not turn out that well. I might actually return to them one day when I've had more practice. When painting the feathers I realized I didn't have the skills nor the steady hand that they would have required. So I kept them relatively basic so I wouldn't ruin this gorgeous model.

Phoenix did have horrible gaps in some joints that had to be filled with green stuff. Gaps in facial area went remarkably well, but putting wings to main body less so. It was difficult area to work, and I had already painted both the wings and the main body. Having red/green deficiency in my eyesight gave me some trouble figuring out how smoothly the Stuff was melding there.

I tried to patch the worst of mistakes with a thick layer of paint in choice areas, which was good for the tiniest seams and harsh edges. Fortunately, however, the ugliest blobs were in places you cannot see unless you really search for them.

Anyway.

A sense of accomplishment to be able to write this blog entry.

Wolves, wolves everywhere

Also about a week ago I played this 75 point game of Warmachine/Hordes.

As I had finally managed to finish painting Venator Dakar, it was time to play a little bit of Skorne. I know there's a tournament coming up a month from now, and perhaps I'll try my luck with Skorne there before going back to Cryx.

But my list was:

[Theme] Winds of Death
Dominar Rasheth [+28]
- Agonizer [6]
- Basilisk Krea [7]
- Cyclops Shaman [8]
- Rhinodon [12]
- Titan Sentry [15]
- Aptimus Marketh [0(5)]
Hutchuk, Ogrun Bounty Hunter [6]
Mortitheurge Willbreaker [0(4)]
Venator Dakar [4]
Paingiver Beast Handlers (min) [5]
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew [2]
Venator Flayer Cannon Crew [5]
Venator Reivers (max) [15]
- Venator Reiver Officer & Standard [4]
Venator Slingers (max) [13]

Opponent had:

[Theme] Call of the Wild
Wurmwood, Tree of Fate [+27]
- Gorax Rager [7]
- Pureblood Warpwolf [17]
- Pureblood Warpwolf [17]
- Warpwolf Stalker [19]
- Warpwolf Stalker [19]
- Wild Argus [7]
Blackclad Wayfarer [0(4)]
Blackclad Wayfarer [0(4)]
Gallows Grove [2]
Gremlin Swarm [3]
Farrow Bone Grinders (max) [8]
Shifting Stones [0(3)]
Shifting Stones [3]

And what an oppressive game it was.

While Rasheth was a fairly good warlock against Cassius, Winds of Death wasn't the best theme here. I was afraid of moving forward with my ranged units as Hellmouth would just annihilate them, and this meant that Circle was able to have all the warbeast out of the range of my weapons. And when Circle did move forward, it did so under Wurmwood's feat, so again I was not able to shoot anywhere.

At least ambushing Hutchuck was able to down one Warpwolf Stalker. Rasheth cast Blood Mark on it via Venator Dakar, and then everything that I could muster to attack warpwolf did so. Hilariously enough they were not able to kill it. It was left alive with one hit box remaining, plus corrosion continuous effect. For once corrosion did not go off at the worst possible moment, and the Warpwolf died at the start of opponent's turn. Phew.

Then a Pureblood assaulted to destroy objective and deal some extra damage with assault spray. In retaliation I was able to kill it with excessive amount of toil and trouble.

Two wolves down, and yet there were still Warpwolves beneath every rock and behind every tree. Will they never end?

Opponent saw a somewhat good chance to assassinate Rasheth, and proceeded with that plan in mind. I don't quite remember what happened except that a critical Hellmouth was missed by the power of triple 1's.

And this left Wurmwood in a less than ideal position to survive Skorne turn.

Eh.

I did not feel like I should have won. Though attrition-wise had fared decently, opponent had already, what, a three control point lead in scenario, or something.

Also I felt that I had played terribly. Except that looking back it was a difficult match for my list.

Scourge of Tempest

About a week ago I played these two 25 point games of Warmachine.

Opponent played:

[Theme] Sons of the Tempest
Captain Victoria Haley [+27]
- Lancer [10]
- Stormclad [18]
Arcane Tempest Gun Mages [11]
- Arcane Tempest Gun Mage Officer [0(4)]
Tempest Blazers (min) [11]

First game I had:

Lich Lord Venethrax [+26]
- Deathripper [6]
- Erebus [16]
- Ripjaw [7]
Swamp Gobber River Raider [4]
Warwitch Siren [4]
Satyxis Raiders (min) [10]
- Satyxis Raider Sea Witch [4]

My main reason for trying this was to see if Venethrax + Erebus could be a viable combo to play outside of theme.

Unit of Satyxis Raiders took out two out of three Blazers, which had me pretty much dominating the zone on left. Warjacks were wrestling in the middle zone, with Erebus being able to neutralize enemy warjacks even if it didn't do a whole lot of damage.

Gun Mages shot all my pieces off from the zone on right, but this didn't help Cygnar in the long run after Cygnar lost Stormclad.

When opponent had only Gun Mages and Haley left, we decided to start a new game.

Game 2:

This time I played with theme that I won't be able to use for a long, long time in 75 point games. If ever.

[Theme] Scourge of the Broken Coast
Lich Lord Venethrax [+26]
- Defiler [8]
- Inflictor [13]
- Slayer [10]
Axiara Wraithblade [0(6)]
Satyxis Raiders (max) [16]
- Satyxis Raider Sea Witch [4]

Again Satyxis took out the Blazers, but situation in the middle wasn't that good. Some amazing damage rolls from Gun Mages wrecked Slayer after I had engaged enemy forces. Well, I did have a full unit of Satyxis still going on, but they'd be struggling to wreck Stormclad with Arcane Shield if I lost Inflictor.

Inflictor was able to get Line of Sight to Haley, so Venethrax cast Terminal Velocity and Inflictor charged Haley. It had to take a free strike from Lancer, but either it missed or didn't break anything of consequence. Inflictor did break something of consequence, namely the opposing warcaster.

Betrayal at Sanurinn Pool

Year 11 hunt and showdown:

Right on the outskirts of settlement hunters encountered a dead Gorm, but as they proceeded to investigate, a mournful bull Gorm charged from the darkness.

Showdown was a standard fight that didn't have much of a story element. Quickly the beast was slain, and survivors returned, victorious.

Barbaric survivors that had accepted their deep-rooted darkness. Now that Ralala had stepped down from leading the hunting parties, one of the eldest members of Sanurinn Pool let out all his rage, jealousy and envy. Drorn and Ralala were the first real parents of this settlement, they should both have been equally revered. But Drorn had fallen, somehow. He did not even have a surname. All of his children he had with Ralala had also died. No legacy whatsoever.

So Drorn took matters in his own hands, tried to set the course of Sanurinn Pool to that which he envisioned. With Insanity 28, he murdered Ralala.

Yes, settlement event is the dreaded Murder.

Year 12

But there were witnesses to this heinous crime. In fact, most of the settlement saw what happened, as Drorn tried to crown himself with Ralala's ribcage as to become undisputed, tyrannical leader of the settlement. I guess he just did not have the charisma to murder a person and get away with it. Ralala had been a god walking amongst men. People were furious. They tore Drorn to pieces and made a warpaint out of Drorn's blood. (This, however, was not an omen for innovating Paint... sigh...)

Clearly, and era had come to an end. Gorm Climate was removed from the timeline, storm had passed, called away by Halyran. There was only the scorching sun, and the fading memory of Ralala's protective presence. Matters like these need to be passed down the generations. Settlement innovates Saga.

Relons studied lanterns and accidentally discovered the fiery power within herself - Red Fist was enough to set alight a more permanent source of heat - Lantern Oven.

Sun Dipping was a great success. Chilons and Halyran entered the beam of light, and walked out as Sun Eaters.

Chilons Sunearr and Halyran Sunearr chose a new surname, for Ralala's dynasty was over. Chilons gave birth to a Child of Sun, who received purification immediately. The newborn had umbilical symbiosis with the strange creatures that had emerged from the sacred pool, and her skin started to reflect light unnaturally. To commemorate the late savior of the settlement, newborn was named Sacrala. And confusing newborn she was.

Accuracy +2, Strength +4, Evasion +3. Courage 2, Understanding 3 and a fighting art to boot. She had probably absorbed the fleeting essence of Ralala and gained some extrasensory information from surroundings, as her art was Trailblazer.

Hunt and showdown:

Very foundations of the settlement being shaken, hunting for the Beast of Sorrow seemed only appropriate.

A titanic beast bellows in the darkness just as hunters start their journey. Spiduka is the only one who does not hear this threat, and wonders why everyone seem so scared all of sudden. Relons even covers in fear as flat on the surface as she possibly can.

Spiduka leads the shaky survivors to scratching grounds. These markings look entirely different than those left by Gorm. Investigations give two Lion Claws.

Chiloresc would have found a statue, but life-time reroll later Chiloresc's attention focused more on a nearby stone fountain. Everyone took a sip. First survivor told how terrible muck it was. Second survivor did not believe, and decided to see for himself. Disgusting. Third one could not believe that water might be so horrible tasting. But it was, much to the astonishment of also fourth survivor.

However, there was something else in the water, too.

Spiduka tasted death, and the bitterness of it all. From now on she would not be scared of anything with maximum Courage. Now she was blind and deaf. Just waiting for shattered jaw.

Sea of Golden Grass taught Halyran exactly the same that Spiduka had learned from drinking of the fetid pool. Bitterness of death. Quite something to trigger See the Truth on a survivor with two hunt experience.

Survivor move past a gibbet where someone is pleading for help. Spiduka, who is the eldest of the group and somehow respected because of that, is deaf. Cannot hear a thing. And all other survivors who can hear the pleas just follow the example of Spiduka.

Now, I know People of the Sun campaign removes Leader from the fighting art deck. But I suppose Relons became a Leader anyway, because Overwhelming Darkness specifically instructed her to gain Leader fighting art. Only Halyran loses it during Overwhelming Darkness. He just cannot bear the shadow of a massive whale swimming overhead.

I realized quickly how risky this showdown was without being able to dash. Trample and Cunning dealt four points of damage that ignored evasion whenever they triggered. I thought fist & tooth mastery would be enough. Severe injuries started piling up even when most survivors had Dried Acanthus with them. Fortunately I don't think there was even one permanent injury. Size Ups played important role in actually winning. I should have taken more detailed notes during showdown, but it was so exciting that I kind of forgot.

Eventually Halyran Sunearr slays the Beast of Sorrow, which has quite a few repercussions as settlement had innovated Saga.

Year 13

Despite Slender Blight coming back to settlement, Sacrala makes the Grand Proclamation. She has heard legends of Ralala, and has a great desire to live up to her mythical name. She consecrates the sacred pool to level 3. A miracle child and a true innovator, newfound guiding light. From what I've learned, incredibly promising young survivors often die to something not all that grandiose. For example, a stern gaze from a scary man.

Settlement special innovated Pottery via Umbilical Symbiosis innovation, and then Forbidden Dance from innovation deck. It was discovered by accident, when an unknown force entered Chiloresc's spirit. Patterns were nigh of revealing secrets not meant for humans. The unknown force twisted Chiloresc into impossible poses, which ruined the dancer. But as there was something sinister and mysterious in the dance, newborn child, Lavias Sunearr imitated Chiloresc's dance, and succeeded to gain +1 evasion, but not understand the meaning behind everything.

It's year 13 and haven't seen Paint even once.

Hunt and Showdown

Together Mud Slide and Acid Storm gave a rocky start for this hunt. In the searing heat of the sun, acid rain made soil into a runny sludge, so that survivor defenses were already ruined before actual fight even began. Acid storm was heading to settlement's direction.

Relons found a survivor called Daress during Overwhelming Darkness, who was scared witless and kept mumbling something about monstrous grief.

Lavias Sunearr pokes a pickaxe through a stone face that resembled his own. Then, he proceeded to gather some herbs, but only wasted everyone's time. To make up for these failures, he suggested a light hearted word game to pass the time. "Well, maybe we play some words, then. Huh? Anyone?"
No-one else was in the mood. They silenced Lavias by rolling their eyes. Lavias lost a point of courage.

Just as showdown is about to begin, Relons notices visible signs of migration.

But one from the antelope herd had been injured. Sacrala followed the bloody trail to their wounded quarry.

What a terrible hunt phase.

Screaming Antelope doesn't reach target on first turn, so it grazes an Acanthus Plant, healing the previous wounds from whatever had injured it. Then it raised it's head, and bloodshot eyes gleamed in the darkness, as it began diabolical trampling.

Lavias was disemboweled, and thus kind of fell out of the showdown when Screaming Antelope sped towards other survivors. Double Dash at least enabled him to move two spaces per turn. His personal journey starts to look a little tragicomic.

Antelope trampled over Sacrala, who had her lungs collapsed for a while. This marked the moment when survivors decided to launch all-out offensive. Sacrala must not fall.

Praying hard, survivors rapidly decrease the size of AI deck. Hands of the Sun is immensely useful. Relons slays the Screaming Antelope level 2, or more exactly caused it to jump to it's death because of degenerating wound. Showdown was a mediocre one. It had it's scary moments, but it didn't turn into a desperate one where player is praying even harder than all the four survivors combined.

Survivors return victorious, and people gather to listen what Daress has to say. He tells a tale of a Beast of Sorrow that had been stalking him and his kin in the darkness. Settlement event was Elder Council.

Year 14

With a smirk Halyran tells that Beast of Sorrow has already been slain, but thanks for telling. Then Halyran is off to Organ Grinder to read the future from entrails. He has to do augury twice, but he does get some Insight that also makes him a tinker.

While performing auguries, Halyran receives a most welcome vision. Settlement innovates.

... yes. PAINT. Finally!

Daress is purified, as has oftentimes happened when survivors are being rescued from the outside. And it's probably a good custom, since Spenaccio had not been purified despite being found from silk nest. He had ran into the Acid Storm, bellowing incoherently. Daress takes a long walk and finds him back, but Spenaccio is so exhausted that he should skip next hunt.

With invention of Paint the survivors attempt to tackle a level 2 Gorm.

Hunt and showdown:

Relons, Sacrala, Spiduka and Halyran

Amidst horizon of bones Halyran finds peculiar scratches on the ground that look like drawings. But whatever their meaning was, Halyran fails to decipher it.

Spiduka, being deaf, did not hear the sound sand and pebbles made as they began to withdraw into the ground. She falls into a suddenly formed sinkhole, but Sacrala's whip saves her.

There's something in the air, perhaps soundwaves human ear cannot hear, that cause head splitting pain to survivors. Relons gains Performance Anxiety disorder, and Sacrala gets Tunnel Vision. Halyran merely closes his eyes and rubs his temples. Spiduka falls to the ground, laughing maniacally. Survivors arrive at the mouth of the cavern complex where their prey is hiding.

Heedless of danger, Spiduka enters the fetid grotto, but was immediately struck down by the acidic fumes. This equaled collapsed lung. Everyone else tried to use something to protect their breathing, and added their waist armor on top of their head.

Which may have actually been a wise thing to do, as Gorm opens the game with Infrasonic Roar, that always deals damage to head location.

Survivor fight in perfect unison. They're like one beast that has eight independent hands. Praying for Hands of the Sun helped immensely in reaching this achievement, but before Gorm drew it's second AI card, it had received staggering amount of nine wounds, two of which came from Amber Poleaxe that Gorm impaled itself a total of three times.

Eat & Run tactics of Gorm fail miserably, but then I will have to start respecting the hideous ability that is Mushth. No survival opportunities means a 1/6 chance to receive a severe head injury right away. And that's what happened to Halyran. He had Dried Acanthus, so it wasn't a table flip time, but had me scared.

In three rounds the Gorm was dead. Praise the Sun. Sacrala killed the Gorm level 2.

But then survivors had to make a blind exit through miasma that was wrecking survivors' innards. The youngest and the eldest suffer heaviest toll of toxins. Sacrala and Spiduka receive -1 permanent strength.

Year 15

Drosel is certain that there is evil spirit amongst the haunted settlement. It must be the vengeful spirit of Ralala, that now possessed Drosel via Haunted settlement event. He gains the Possessed ability.

Settlement special innovates Citrinitas and innovates Nightmare Training the old fashioned way.

Relons then takes some trepanning sessions to cure her Megalophobia. Chilons is the most qualified for this job - after all, she is the vivisector. First result is Expanded Consciousness, which gave her Quixotic disorder and Tumble fighting art, which is actually a detriment. I want Relons to collide with monsters as much as possible.

She takes another trepanning, and look at that. Expanded Consciousness again. I suppose the plan to remove Megalophobia worked, but not in the way I imagined it would.

Now that Chilons got the hang of it, it was easier to work with Halyran, who manages to remove Megalophobia right away. Soon enough I plan on hunting the Phoenix, and being Megalophobic ruins that plan by making it illegal. Sacrala goes into Nightmare Training, but even after five tries does not succeed in learning Whip specialization.

Hunt and showdown:

To kill the time survivors hunt level 2 phoenix.

Time flows backwards, and this is simply too much of Relons. She has emotional overload, which turns into a blind rage.

Sacrala finds her one true love, the Lovelorn Rock. This was what she had been preparing for in the nightmare training. Not to learn to fight - but to love. Bird Brained phoenix flies on top of Overwhelming Darkness and survivors refresh themselves at a stone fountain before showdown starts.

Relons, the one with Red Fist fighting art has a deja vu moment that she should not exist. So she disappears, deep into her expanded consciousness. Phoenix also kills Sacrala's children from the future, as well as Halyran's.

Sacrala avenged their genitals by striking Phoenix in the inner face at with Killing Blow effect. She would have avenged Relons, too, but she never existed.

Year 16

Time had been flowing backwards, so settlement faces Slender Blight again. This time departing survivors need to swap their insanity and survival values.

Upcoming showdown is one with Manhunter level 3.

Daress and Spiounas have child after Spiounas is purified. They choose Darksilk as their surname. Baby is named Spiress.

Halyran tries to train third point of shield proficiency, but fails even with four attempts.

Settlement innovates Heart Flute.

Then Lavias shoots Manhunter level 3 dead with Clawhead Arrow.

Sacrala has heard stories how Ralala had always been there for settlement at the time of need - whenever their pool had been invaded by human-like creatures like these. Now she feels herself taking the place of her grandmother as the ultimate grand protector of Sanurinn Pool. This clears her mind up a little, and she loses her Tunnel Vision. Storytelling tradition has been going on for some time now, so this fight is added into already lengthy record of sagas. Returning survivors gain +1 strength and Quixotic. This seems rather excessive, but year 20 is very soon here.

Daress has heard legends how these collectors arrive into the settlement now and then. This sparks vague memories about the time he had spent in the vast darkness before being rescued. He has seen these collectors before. And he remembers hiding from them. Daress is a long time veteran when it comes to avoidance. He gains Seasoned Hunter and Trailblazer fighting arts.

Year 16 hunt shall be Lion God, and truthfully I'm more worried about the aftermath event than the actual showdown.

Battle for Starfail

For the first time in a few years, I finally got to play Deadzone again. These games were included in the deadzone Battle for Starfall summer campaign. And when I took a look at the Deadzone campaign page I was impressed. Statistics! Pie charts! Percentages! I don't think I've ever seen this detailed, complex and player-involving campaign in any of the game systems I've paid some attention to over the years.

I really should have taken a closer look on this earlier, because a campaign like that might actually have me playing more often. But it's already last week of the campaign. Boo hoo.

Opponent kindly let me make my lists from his Outbreak supplement, so I got to test some new toys, too.

Sector Xalos North, raining
150 pts
Stage 3A lieutenant with holo sight
2x Stage 3A's, one with smoke grenade and one with frag grenade.
2x Stage 2A leaper
2x Stage 2B burster
Stage 3Z Zombie
Plague Enforcer with extra ammo.

Opponent had an assortment of enforcers, but they were all normal troopers - and with that I mean that there were no vehicles, or light or heavy enforcers or supporting models.

Smoke grenade muton acts heroically by missing the smoke grenade from where I wanted it. It landed to block line of sight to and from a cube where opponent wouldn't be able to draw LoS anyway. Well, at least it provided some penalties to shooting, but it was a bit of a double edged sword as I had some units that would've liked to shoot.

Well. Plague Enforcer shoots a dud shot, gaining blast type for this round. Otherwise there would have been good position for my enforcer, but either a fusion thingy or grenade tossed this 3VP model to ground. I knew it probably wouldn't be very wise thing to do, but I wanted to try to get some work done with my ethereal lieutenant. But I somehow messed up with special action dice and couldn't move it back to safety.

Bur(k)ster held pretty well against two enforcers that were sent against it. Eventually they blew it up in melee, which triggered nice Boom effect. But nothing really happened there. Throughout this game it felt like whenever I rolled exceptionally well, so did my opponent. Best I could do was some lucky wounds to enforcers. But did I kill more than one? I don't remember.

Maybe I did once chrysalid leapers got into melee somewhere in the middle, but by then it was too late for Plague to catch up on victory points.

Plague Teraton

Here opponent had Strider and a few of the heaviest enforcer type they have available, plus a couple of the scouty type enforcers with tag rifles or something.

Again my smoke grenade shenanigans fail miserably. This time the grenade landed where I wanted it - but then it dissipated right away at the start of next round, leaving my troops there in the open.

Plague enforcer takes a vantage point and tries to make the experimental weapon function a little better than last time. I think it actually did one wound to the lightweight enforcers. It did soak up quite a lot of bullets before dying, but... again, it's a 3VP unit. Losing it hurts.

For some time plague survived with no other notable losses, but stage 2A's were getting wounds in which meant rampage tests.

Grenade launcher finally managed to position itself so that it could shoot an explosive, which killed one of the little enforcers. Another enforcer that was still growing died to zombie onslaught.

What griefs me most in this game was my good assault on the Strider. Movements were carefully orchestrated, and I had quite optimal set of effects stacked against it (Stage 2A leaper with army special action and extra melee, plus supporting stage 3A), but scored only one wound then, and nothing at all when it escaped the fight.

Strider got into brawl with Teraton, but Teraton isn't a good unit to crack such armor.

Desperately did Plague fight, but killed only two pathfinders and did one wound to Strider.

However, that's only half of the story. I had my chance in scoring scenario point - I did get to score points from enemy side, as well as controlled both regular VP areas for a while. But in the end I lost too many models and could not stop enforcers from doing the same. Another loss for plague.

Again it did feel like I rolled badly, but considering how resilient enemy forces were that may have been just a gut feeling, as winning opposed tests too little had no effect whatsoever.
