28.6. - last game in Hankasalmi for a while

So a visit is coming to an end soonish. Talisman is packed up now and won't be opened until, well, don't know.

But a report from last game played:
Random end condition (Proved to be the Ice Queen)
Characters: Warlock and Swashbuckler

Game started amazingly. Not more than 10 game rounds had passed and Swashbucker was sporting with effective strenght 7-8 in battle, and Warlock had about the same.

But then started Swashbuckler's downfall, as he had to jump here and there with one life, all the while Warlock was a whirlwind of doom on the playing board. Well, granted, he didn't win a strenght 16 encounter, nor Craft 13. Dungeon was a bit harsh place...

Warlock had Finger of Death spell since beginning and planned on getting it to bear against Lord of Darkness. Every possible turn to keep Warlock from getting to the treasure chamber was thwarted for a long time. First, just when he was about to enter treasure chamber, a trap door threw him back to square one. Then, when he had traveled back to middle area of the dungeon, he had to accomplish his warlock quest, which in turn teleported him back to warlock's cave.

Then, after a long journey, he actually managed to confront Lord of Darkness. Then Swashbuckler Nullified all spells the warlock had. Luckily enough, all the long journeys had raised warlock's craft to adequate levels, and he had elixir of wrath. In the end it was a Lord with craft 12 against Warlock's Craft 16. And warlock beat Lord of Darkness so badly he was teleported to inner region. Warlock was at two lives, so he thought it best to actually get Totem Staff and not the Cloak of Feathers.

It was pretty much game over for Swashbuckler by then.

Warlock ran to Crown of Command, killed the Ice Queen, failing to take a life from her once.

Victorious one: Warlock.

28.6.

And we're continuing Talisman sessions here in Hankasalmi.

This time Druid and Valkyrie were duking it out.

Druid proved to be a really strong character with all the spell gaining shenanigans. All in all, Druid was a lucky bastard through the whole game.

We played an alternative game with Warlock's Quests. Druid had I think following quests: Discard a 7 point trophy, go to the alchemist, discard one fate and discard one magic object. Valkyrie had to kill an animal, visit the city, gain one strenght and discard two gold.

Last quests for both to accomplish were to visit the alchemist and to discard two gold. Both were kinda funny.

Druid killed the Eagle King, that gave him a teleport to any outer or middle region space. Well, that was the city and alchemist, and from there he was teleported to warlock's cave to receive the Talisman.

Valkyrie stumbled into magical portal and was teleported into Lost City. From there she found three gold and was able to finish the quest. Well, she was (in one turn) teleported from middle region to highland's lost city, and from there to warlock's cave.

Druid managed to get his strenght and craft high enough to try to get into inner region first, and the game mode favored rushing in, as the first one to reach Crown of Command would win, just the first one to reach, no Command spell or anything.

Valkyrie tried to rush Lord of Darkness to receive the Cloak of Feathers and her combat statistics were a lot better than Druid's, so had it been a normal game, Valkyrie could have won if Druid would've botched some Command spells, but that was not to be.

Druid was victorious.

27.6. Hankasalmi - faerie fire

Another two player game against the same opponent.

Characters drawn were Dwarf and Fairy. Beginning of the game was hilarious as the board quickly filled with difficult enemies. Fairy (with Strenght 1) drew a few strenght monsters there and messed up with all of them, and almost every card the Dwarf drew were Craft monsters with at least Craft 3, many having craft up to 5.

What followed was that both characters tried desperately to get healed. It was easier for the Fairy, however, because of her alignment she could heal to full health at the Chapel.

Fairy has such terrible Fate and the spell cycling is totally random... this all in all seems to make the Fairy a really exciting character to play, because her abilities are really powerful, but she has huge weaknesses too in the form of Strenght 1 and randomness that comes from the lack of fate and not being able to count on spells.

Fairy got the ball rolling first and her Craft began to grow. She managed to get enough Strenght too to survive most enemies, too, so she had a clear advantage.

Dwarf, however, failed miserably at everything and managed to get himself killed during game. He did survive some amazing things, but in the end, an angry centaur came and killed him.

Next character that was drawn was the Highlander.

Despite being many many rounds late, the Highlander managed to grab enough Strenght to threaten Fairy seriously. We were playing random ending again and Fairy got to the crown first. Fairy had Lucky Charm, that allowed her to decide what number she rolled upon rolling a dice, and the ending happened to be Hand of Doom. So that combination was automatic win for the Fairy, because if you rolled a six at Hand of Doom, you won automatically without any further rolls necessary.

The Highlander, at the moment Fairy got to the crown, was one turn short of beating up Lord of Darkness to get the Cloak of Feathers.

Well, I guess randomness is what this game is all about, to see different situations that very random things can create. Me likes!

So, victory for: Fairy.

27.6 - Sucks to be a Thief!

Today I played a two player game of Talisman.

Randomly picked characters were the Thief and Minstrel.

And, did it really suck to be a thief in this game? Well, it did!

We played a hidden victory condition game. Both players picked up a talisman on the first 5 rounds of the game. Those first 5 round looked pretty good.

Then Minstrel managed to charm a Strenght 4 animal and things looked grim. Minstrel went to Highlands pretty soon after and almost ran through it, killing Eagle King in the process and getting weapon of his. The weapon denied other players use of Armour in combat against Minstrel and gave +2 to Craft in psychic combat.

Obviously Thief wasn't overjoyed, but thought that if the dice ever presented a chance, he would steal the best stuff from Minstrel.

Well, next Minstrel draws a Warhorse, which allows the player to add both his Strenght and Craft to battles. At that point it was something like Strenght 15+, Craft 11 Minstrel, so losing Warhorse to a psychic combat was unlikely.

However, Thief thought that he could always steal.

Then enter Howl of the Wendigo. It's an event that forces player to attack the character he or she lands on. Thief had effective combat stats of Strenght 5-7 and Craft 6-8. So, after that if he proceeded to steal stuff, he would have to attack the Minstrel.

Thief is a bad character in two player games anyway, and such an event really nullified about all special rules on Thief.

After such tragic happenings there was a race to defeat Lord of Darkness to gain Cloak of Feathers. Of course Minstrel won that race and got to the Lord first and kicked his ancient sitting organ rather badly.

Next Thief tried to scrape some treasures what was left in the vault. Thief had Weighted Dice, and chose that he rolled a 6 on the attack score against Lord of Darkness and he cast a spell that gave him an additional die that would be added to the six.

All and all, Thief actually won the Lord of Darkness and took that flamethrower, thinking that it would be the only chance to kill of that horrible Minstrel.

Though they never met on the battlefield. Minstrel came first to the Crown of Command, and it was revealed that Ice Queen was sitting there. Strenght 12 didn't really do much against (by then) Strenght 21. Game over.

Winner: Minstrel.

- Characters played:
- Merchant: 1
- Knight: 1
- Gypsy: 1 (1 victory)

21.6 Salo - friend's place again

So, we played a couple of two player games, Thurn und Taxis again.

I did win both of them and felt a bit bad :(

It's kinda nasty thing when you're a gamer geek and play with people that play less board games.

However, first game was a tough one. Both managed to grab the prize for being on all colors and then random badges. I ended the game by making a road of seven cities, so I got 10 points out of that, and we had 1 point difference. So yeah, tough game.

Next game I had very good luck with cards I got. I won quite clearly, but the opponent did something I've never ever seen before in Thurn und Taxis. That was a road of 16 cities long. It had all the cities in Baiern and a few other cities too.

20.6 Salo - friend's place

I was visiting friends and brought Thurn und Taxis with me.

We played a game with three players.

I was the only player who had ever played the game before so I guess I had a certain advantage there.

Uh, I just realized there isn't much else to make statistics from Thurn und Taxis except the number of games played. But I guess I'll write some other stuff.

I rarely get the Baiern area because I'm usually obsessed with getting the prize badge of having a post office in every color. But in this game it just happened that I conquered the inner Germany under the iron heel of red post offices.

I began the game and I ended the game by reaching the post route of 7 cities card. This meant that the round was played to end and both opponents got one turn to play. And one player managed to snatch a frickin' (I hate that word by the way) 8 or 9 points! She got the badge of having a post office in all colors and on top of that she got the blue area. I don't remember if the blue area was still giving 3 points or was it 2 points only.

However, this brought us to even point, me and she had 19 points. So it was time to check the rulebook, this was pretty uncommon situation. I was remembering that the one who had less unused post offices would win, and that would have meant my opponent won. But to my advantage rulebook pointed out that if two players have equal points then the one who has the badge of ending the game won. And that one was with me.

So I won! Hooray?

Board Game Evening at Fantasiapelit, Jyväskylä 14.06.

Almost a year passed since I last managed to bring myself to get my lazy sitting body part to Fantasiapelit gaming evening.

I brought Talisman with all the released add-ons with me.

After a little waiting it became a four player game with following characters around:

Merchant, Sorceress, Gypsy and Knight.

Sorceress began the game by being a true PITA for other players, as her special ability allows her to steal a follower from a character she lands on. I lost my lucky mule and another player lost Porter (that's basically a mule too). She also stole at least two other followers that weren't as good, though, but still... Sorceress' power really escalates when there's more players around.

Merchant spent most of his time at 1 life, avoiding any and all threats that might come his way. Not much time to develop his character...

There was a huge surge to Highlands boards. Gypsy had insane luck there and had, what, like 7-8 trinkets with him (Trinkets don't count to item limit of 4. Well, I wanted especially to visit there because this was my first time playing with Highlands expansion. I, however, got only beaten severely there. Yeah, you guessed it by now, I did play the Merchant.

Poor Sorceress tried to beat the Eagle King I think three times, and every time she throwed a standoff, that results in teleport to the Crags.

When Merchant finally managed to heal himself, he went off to the Dungeon. About the first card he drawed there was the Talisman. Knight and Gypsy were already questing for the Talisman. I don't know why, I guess out of sheer stupidity, Merchant continued deeper into the Dungeon, not remembering he had Axe to cross the river and enough Craft to try, with a little bit of luck, to go and win the game by reaching the Crown of Command.

Well, when the thought dawned on Merchant, he proceeded to run to the crown. But sadly the Knight managed to accomplish his quest about the same time and we entered the inner region exactly at the same time. Knight had Strenght 14, Merchant had, I think, about 7. Not much contest there.

Merchant reached the crown first, because Knight botched some rolls in the inner region, but had only about two rounds to throw the Command Spell around, and failed both of them. Then Knight came in and started some serious beating.

Merchant was clad in Armour, though. And was quite lucky in armor rolls and it took ages for the Knight to kill off the Merchant. This gave the Gypsy enough time to acquire a Talisman and come in.

And then followed one of the most "exciting" and "boring" fights I've ever seen in my games of Talisman. I think Gypsy and Knight threw dice for at least 10 minutes, probably more.

It was possible thus: Knight had strenght 14, Gypsy had 13. Knight had Armour that ignored a lost life in battle with dice roll of 4, 5 or 6. Knight had a sword that gave him a Fate counter every time he won a fight. Gypsy had an armour too that worked the same way. Gypsy, however, had a life total of 15. Of course she had only 4 at a time, but she had tons of healing available. So, Knight won most of the fights, giving him a limitless supply of re-rolls. But Gypsy had tons of life. Both characters ignored half of the lost lives.

In the end, Gypsy was down to 1 life with no healing available any longer, when she eventually won the game. I wanted the victory go to Knight because it was a first time player playing that character, but, well, the dice are fickle.

Winner: Gypsy

So, on with the statistics:

Talisman: 1 games played.
- Characters played:
- Merchant: 1
- Knight: 1
- Gypsy: 1 (1 victory)
- Sorceress: 1

Another blog of nerdy stuff that has mainly personal interest only

Ah well.

I do enjoy some good statistics. Not any statistics, however. Personal statistics. I love to see numbers telling me what I've done or what has happened.

Not on every aspect of life, either. I do stat very stupid things, I admit that, but most fascinating things (and what I'm going to put here) are games. And here I mean board games and miniatures games and the like. Their Win/Loss ratios and about anything else that can be counted up.

So, what does this have to do with this blog? Well, it kinda doesn't. I won't post spreadsheets here, though I might do some kind of a counting up just for my pleasure.

But this blog will be a record of all games I will be playing from now on.

Games I'll be mostly playing are:

Board Games:
- Talisman
- A Touch of Evil
- Race for the Galaxy (unlikely)
- Thurn und Taxis

Miniatures games:
- Warmachine/Hordes (most posts will be about this one)

Posts will be a brief summary of the games played. I'll write down the last game of Talisman soonish to give myself an idea how I'll write things up even if it was played two days ago.
