Kalmana Retreat 20-24

Lantern Year 20 hunt & showdown Dung Beetle Knight level 2

Ouglu, Cardani, Stapuran and Anetarias began hunt for a level 2 Dung Beetle Knight.

Anetarias didn't prove to be that accomplished miner - she, too, along with all the other miners started her career as a hemophobic.

Stapuran, on the other hand, has clearly managed to live through whatever trauma the encounter with Bug Man had given him. This time he stopped a stumbling down resin dung ball with his bare hands. Then, afterwards, when he once again encountered Bug Man, just silently reflected it, him, the world outside of both, while the Bug Man departed to mind its own business.

Which is, possibly, the very next showdown.

... and right on the very first round things blow up.

Cardani gets showered with dung milk with straight damage to body, and survivors have to spend masses of survival points to get her into shape to face the attack.

Then Ouglu shoots the monster with Vespertine Bow and triggers one of those basic action reactions. He takes three severe injuries, but one is mitigated by Dried Acanthus. Still, he gets -1 movement token and cannot surge until the end of showdown.

Cardani attacks with Knuckle Shield to train proficiency, and in total they did four points of damage on round one. Not too bad, but then the Dung Beetle Knight throwss the ball at Ouglu, dealing two more severe injuries! This time breaking his hip and dislocating his shoulder - meaning he won't be able to activate his weapon.

A critical effect gave the Knight -1 movement token, which was immensely helpful in negating Dung Beetle's basic actions. Which seems to be the only way to not get severe injuries in this fight. From then on Cardani had to do surge every turn attacks with Gaxe, and whittled the AI deck down. Out of the 15 wounds Dung Beetle Knight has, two were made by Ouglu, one by Anetarias and all the remaining by Cardani. Finishing blow was by Cardani's axe, which gave the survivors Regenerating Blade.

Lantern Year 21 - Slender Blight

After my despicable escape from the fight with Slenderman, it came to give me a good scare. "Fortunately" Slender Blight only messed up my plan to Nightmare Train finally a bow master.

1: Settlement innovates Momento Mori
2: Lonili prepares the farm, placing Black Harvest on the timeline for lantern year 25.
3: Flowerista upgrades the level of Black Harvest by 1.
4: Stapurano adds a letter to his name, gaining new lifetime as his re-roll was used during Dung Beetle Knight showdown.
5: Stapurano's Matcmaker gives Danarias and Ardanet a new baby boy, Sairtena Sagasu.
6: One Love Juice is fermented from Pottery, which gives Sairtena a sibling, Ranadra Sagasu.
7: War room plan is made.
8: Shrine ritual is success.

Lantern Year 21 hunt and showdown - Beast of Sorrow

The tried and tested group goes to hunt the mythical beast Elder Council once mumbled about. Beast of Sorrow seems a juicy target because of the guaranteed iron. Stapuran

Hunt phase was short, all survivors found out that the Beast of Sorrow was in heat, and had scratched its markings all over the territory. Then, survivors suffer a Time Lapse - and since Cardani has the Hours Ring, showdown was started immediately.

Ouglu started the showdown by shooting Beast of Sorrow in the testicles. Suddenly survivors were facing the Beast of Fury, and Ouglu who had the least armor points available was the priority target. Hooray. Again one point away from Bow Mastery... First AI card after receiving permanent priority target token was Size Up, and it was a trauma right away. A 20% chance of dying was instead Delicios disorder, so there may have been a sigh of relief or two.

But I soon learnt how disturbing asset an Axe Master is. Round two, and there were already three persistent injuries on the cat.

Cardani did the most job in this instance, but it was Ouglu who dealt the starting wound and the final wound. Beast of Sorrow had its potential moments with some reactions, but when most survivors wound on 2+, those failures weren't too much of a scare.

Lantern Year 22 - Hunt Re-Enactment

Cardani and Lonili once again dress out in their favorite costume play, with Cardani losing Heroic fighting art in favor or Last Man Standing. Oh well.

Thanks to having Saga, there is now a horrendous amount of endeavors available.

10 Endeavors
1: Settlement innovates Shadow Dancing
2: Stapurano's matchmaking gives Danalne and Zamarias Alnerias Zamarotte, and Love Juice has the couple bring forth Danzama Zamarotte.
3: Settlement builds Stone Circle
4: Cardani learns the Rhythm Chaser fighting art
5: Stapurano drums alone
6: Ouglu drums alone
7: Settlement brews Love Juice with Pottery and uses it straight away. Welcome, Kalgar and Netani Masvar.
8: Flowerista upgrades the level of Black Harvest by 1
9: War Room plan is made.
10: Shrine ritual is a success

But it's year 22, which means settlement is plagued by one last Manhunter. Level 4 has me scared, since I've only fought him once - and that was with completely overpowered People of the Sun campaign.

Year 22 Manhunter Showdown
Ouglu, Cardani, and Stapurano, plus Kalnetan the Manhunter veteran, face off against this nemesis.

Random terrain was Obsidian Tower, and as wanted to stack as much strength on Cardani as possible, she was out of the fight for the first round.

Nonetheless, four wounds were done to the Manhunter, all by Ouglu. Kalnetan flushed out a Stake, and Stapurano did a Mantrap, receiving Aichmophobia in the process. Good thing he's a club user.

Fortunately, the tactics card had been the Diversion Tactics, which came into good use throughout the fight. Those hits start to hurt with +2 damage counters!

Ouglu nearly got himself killed by receiving Priority Target Token, but Dried Acanthus saved him from that Gun Action ending his life.

Cardani, however, took the most of the attacks in and even triggered the trap. This resulted in her actually having to roll for severe injuries, which made had her skip the next hunt. That was actually even worse than receiving some permanent injury - I've been saving the Hunter's Heart for crippling severes, and the showdown gave the survivors Crimson Vial, too.

But when Cardani started to receive severe injuries, it was time for the showdown to end. Manhunter had three cards left in it's AI deck, and one of them was persistent injury. With two attacks she'd be able to kill him, provided they hit. Kalnetan had arranged hit locations to be in proper order, and Cardani took a swing.

She's hitting on 2+, and three attacks with Gaxe all were ones. I would have rubbed my eyes if I wasn't stunned otherwise.

Stapurano managed to patch her blunder a little, but it was no dead Manhunter yet. Tombstone scored one hit against Cardani, which was distracted off by Kalnetan. Then Pistol Whip attack scored three hit, one of which was taken off by Kalnetan and two others were dodged, so no problems there. Except that Kalnetan was at zero survival, Ouglu at one, Cardani at three and only Stapuran had six.

Ouglu had his chances of taking two aimed shots against Manhunter to kill it, and accomplished this critical task.

It was a scary fight, and one that gave settlement a reason to start practicing blood sacrifices to keep Cardani hunting Dung Beetle Knights.

Danarias Sagasu eats one of the two Lonely Fruits to clear Cardani's "skip next hunt" and Ouglu, Stapuranoc, Anetarias and Danalne depart for a showdown against level 3 Lonely Tree, and immediately call it quits. A bit cheaty thing to do, especially when Danalne used Gloom Cream to clear a little bit of her hunt xp, but I'm aiming for the Gold Smoke Knight and have to use every trick at my disposal.

Lantern Year 22: Dung Beetle Knight level 2

Ouglu, Cardani, Stapuranoc and Anetarias prepare for the hunt.

First, Anetarias encounters the Lorekeeper. Brown Ground terrifies everyone so that survivors got next to no insanity left. After getting scared witless, the survivors hear the Forbidden Word - Stapuranoca hears it a second time and this unlocks his sleeping powers of ability to walk the ley lines.

Last space before showdown, Stapuranoca is the event revealer again and for the third time encounters the Bug Man. The two must have something going on.

Anyway. Then starts the actual fight. Survivors are riddled with penalty tokens from Overwhelming Darkness and hunt events, and Cardani, Ouglu and Stapuranoca have a -1 strength tokens even after getting to remove some of them via Song of the Brave.

Feculent Drumming opens up the game, which sounds familiar. However, this time the drummer beetle was a breeze as far as feeling like you're constantly on the verge of a disaster goes. And there were a few moments that could have resulted in a few severe injury rolls, but lucky criticals canceled those effects. Also, mostly thanks to Cardani, there were four persistent injuries at the end of the showdown. You could even feel bad for the Dung Beetle.

Anetarias spelunks for death, but doesn't find it. Only iron and skulls.

Lantern Year 23: Elder Council

An elder would have wanted to depart on a hunt, yet too bad there are no retired survivors in the settlement. Oh gosh, what a shame. However, someone still took one endeavor away by telling tall tales.

1: Went to Elder Council.
2: Settlement innovates Bed.
3: Cardani uses Nightmare Training to get a point of Shield proficiency.
4: Stapuranoca's matchmaker gives settlement another half-plant, Ristapurac Gnotti. Love Juice further expands the family with Flonoca and Werinoca.
5: Ouglu drums alone.
6: Cardani drums alone.
7: Settlement makes some leather.
8: Enewarbabolactylo gets a new lifetime from drumming.
9: Shrine ritual fails. is a success.

Since Hands of Heat is coming with the terrible festivities of losing resources, settlement develops a ton of new gear. A new beacon shield is a noteworthy mention.

Lantern Year 23 showdown - Slenderman level 3

I really don't get it how you're supposed to win this fight on year 19. With my two overpowered survivors, Ouglu and Cardani, it still took every trick at my disposal to win the encounter. Slenderking is definitely going into history as the most terrifying fight in Kingdom Death: Monster for me.

While Cardani started well enough - she scored criticals left and right despite +1 luck token on Slenderking - those criticals got her Ensnared.

Only Stapuranoca did not have Blotted Out, and this gave me a sense of security until bleed tokens threatened to kill Ouglu. He would have, if Stapuranoca hadn't used his re-roll to save him in the Dark Place.

Various hits that Slenderking was doing was removing all armor points and putting the heavy damage level even for my most heavily armored survivors. While actual attacks were rare, the ones that did get through (seven damage via insanity converted into self damage, mind control spores poking six damage to two survivors...) were threatening lives.

And then the trap card was spotted around in the middle of the deck, which made imperative to keep Anetarias with her necromancer's circlet on board.

I was afraid of the trap, and kept shuffling it further down the deck till the end of the showdown.

Very last hit location in the deck was scored the kill by Ouglu's aimed Vespertine Bow shot. Had it not been so, I would've had to trigger the trap card. And considering Deathpact was used to trigger one extra wound via critical effect, Stapuranoca used Club Mastery successfully once, and Cardani had three extra wounds via criticals thanks to Gaxe'savage, it was closest and most dangerous showdown up to date in Kalmana Retreat. Or at least it felt that way.

Lantern Year 24 - Heat Wave

Heat Wave. Absolutely the worst possible settlement event to draw right now, as Anetarias was the only survivor with no heavy gear during showdown with Slenderking. Now Ouglu, Stapuranoca or Cardani may not depart next year, no matter what I do. Because of how it is worded on the settlement event, I can't even cheat with another Lonely Fruit.

I'm, like, back to basics now. Maybe this taught me important lesson about A-teams and B-teams, as the settlement does not have B-team. I was planning to hunt level 3 screaming antelope for some delicious venison oco busco and black lichen, but looks like I'll have to embarrassingly settle with a level 2 instead.

Also, settlement loses 25 resources thanks to Hands of Heat. People were a tad over-excited from the heat wave and branded Cardani's hands.

Nine endeavors.

1: settlement innovates Citrinitas
2-4: Murrano tries to find some fluid to depart with heavy gear, and finally succeeds.
5: Stapuranocan
6: Kalnetan succeeds with Otherworldly Luck to enable settlement to endeavor normally.
7: Cardani attempts Nightmare Training
8: Shrine ritual is success
9: War Room plan is made

Lantern Year 24 hunt & showdown - Screaming Antelope level 2

Murrano Outsu takes Sagasu children with him on the hunt. Danet, Anarda and Sairtena Sagasu first tackle the carpet of ticks, find a broken lantern oven and scavenge something from a vomit pile. Sairtena descends to the worm tunnels, only to strike a conversation with herself. As a consequence she now believes she's immortal.

Herb gathering is botched, but at least Grazing Fields gave one fresh acanthus.

Then the showdown, which went as easily as expected. It's a bit annoying there aren't level 2.5 monsters, since level two is far too easy by now, but with fresh survivors level 3 feels to hard when your best survivor wounds on 7+ or so.

Murrano dealt the killing blow with Gaxe, and incidentally I noticed that on lantern year 14 he dealt the killing blow to Screaming Antelope level 2. Coincidence? I think yes.

Ah well. Then the Watcher awakens.

Lantern Year 25 - Plague

The hunting party caught a disease, but most importantly no results of 1-2. Secret Meeting triggers, and Kalnetan gains Beetle Strength secret fighting art. And then it's time for the long-awaited Black Harvest!

Lonili succeeds to return with vampiric artichoke alive. Flowerista restores Calcified Shoulder Pads using Scell resource to guarantee success. And voilĂ , completed Dung Beetle Knight armor set. Not only that, but with double Century Greaves.

1: Settlement innovates Petal Spiral
2: Settlement makes some leather
3-5 Settlement smelts scrap for iron
6: Cooking Venison Oco Busco for Cardani
7: Settlement uses Augury to see the portents of the upcoming fight. Instead, they saw a baby named Anorlu Outsu.
8: Shrine ritual is a success

But the Watcher fight shall begin the next binge-playing of Kingdom Death: Monster. This must suffice for now.

(Departing bonuses: +settlement limit survival, +2 armor to each location)

- Craving for human flesh in the form of Marrow Hunger.
- Murdered by Cardani. Purpose fulfilled, I suppose.
- +3 permanent strength, +1 permanent speed.

Qyillus, one of the original four from both Deluge and Retreat
Cause of death: Valiantly defended the settlement from spiderlings during Season of the Spiderling, failing in that but perhaps her example encouraged the remaining survivors to try extra hard and achieve victory?
- Has taught the secrets of language twice to different settlements an spoke some reason to the settlement during Endless Screams.
- Considering the above, no surprise she won debate contest during Triathlon of Death, and was third during race contest and lost fight contest. After all, she wasn't that much of a fighter anyway if we read into her Enfeebled disorder.
- Has hunted Gorm, and slain one Gorm and one Screaming Antelope.
- Enfeebled and Megalophobic disorder
- +1 permanent accuracy, +1 permanent strength. 3 courage (matchmaker), 3 understanding (tinker).

Warba and Warbo, the progenitors of plant based survivors in Kalmana Deluge.

Nasanovim Minovas, mourning parent of a child lost she can't clearly remember any more. One of the original four of Retreat.
- Encountered an elderly bee that doomed her and her future children.
- Believes she has a higher purpose, though, and has Quixotic disorder. She has become Tenacious and is Blotted Out.
- Shared the feast of Mesul during Unnatural Hunger, triggering Cannibalize.
- Won the fight contest, and placed second during race contest and third during debate contest in Triathlon of Death.
- Deranged expression. With a history like hers, I'd have one too.
- Forgot her name from first non-violent visit of Slenderking.
- Made a sculpture of her vague memories about the Slenderking, imbuing it with her Extra Sense.
- Killed the Slenderking on lantern year 9.
- Was slain by Hooded Knight on lantern year 9.
- Has two children with Kalnetan.
- Has hunted Gorm thrice and is a LY 4 Butcher and LY 5 Manhunter survivor. She killed LY 8 Gorm.
- +1 permanent accuracy, +2 permanent strength and +2 evasion, courage 7 (matchmaker) and understanding 3 (explore).
- Doomed Path: You may always choose Path of Doomed during Overwhelming Darkness. If you do, gain +1 on your roll. When you are one of the parents during Intimacy, the children will inherit this ability.

*

Logar, the twice widowed apathetic and megalophobic trailblazer. He is also a seasoned hunter without much actual hunt experience.
- Is the first father of the settlement, and has four children - Nengar, Rastgar, Lostus and Suragar with two different mothers, one of whom is dead and another has been banished from the settlement. No wonder he's apathetic.
- Won the race contest, but placed third during fight contest and lost the debate contest during Triathlon of Death. Especially debate result seems thematic - he was the only participant from Kalmana Retreat, others were from the first settlement.
- Is health-conscious after watching four survivors die from Necrotoxic Mistletoe.
- +1 permanent movement, +1 permanent strength, +1 permanent evasion.
- Hunted Gorm on lantern year 2 and is LY 5 Manhunter survivor.
- Turned into statue on lantern year 10 hunt.

*

Cardetan Masvar, the first survivor whose lineage mingled with that of another lineage. He's the son of Cardani and Kalnetan.
- Took part in dreaming the hunt for Screaming Antelope in vivid detail.
- Has heard the forbidden word.
- Took part in shadow puppet play, twice. Became Ruthless as a result.
- Dealt killing blow to Manhunter on Lantern Year 10.
- Dealt killing blow to Phoenix on lantern year 11.
- Hunted level 2 gorm on Lantern Year 12
- Took part in The Hand's playful little visit during LY 13.
- Honorable from not slaying infant gorm. So he's honorable and ruthless at the same time.
- Nearly got killed while trying to use Nightmare Training on LY 15.
- Died to Lion God on LY 16.
- +2 permanent accuracy, +3 permanent strength, +1 permanent evasion
- 2 courage, 3 understanding (analyze)
- Is training bow with four dots in proficiency.

*

Surastus, a banished survivor who tinkered with lanterns and got disfigured. Before departing, suppose she was the "old crone" that offered Sleeping Virus Flower for Cardani. She's revisited her settlement, and caused Cardani to murder Nengar. Scarred Kalnetan's eyes.

Into the Quarantine Zone

Had a 50 soul stone game of Malifaux. I'm not putting pictures this time, as we had makeshift terrain and I had forgotten to take my tokens with me, so board and the plethora of tokens is quite unsightly.

My list was:

Seamus + The Whisper
Copycat Killer
Rogue Necromancy
Bete Noire
2x Rotten Belle
Dead Doxy
Dead Dandy
Gravedigger

Pool: 3

Schemes: Let Them Bleed, Catch and Release

Opponent had

Asami Tanaka
Amanjaku
2x Akaname
Obsidian Oni
Jorogumo
Yokai
Shadow Emissary

Schemes: Claim Jump, Take a Prisoner
Pool: 10

Scenario was Public Enemies.

Gravedigger begins Resurrectionist turn with Blasphemous Rituals and drives its cart mid-field. Seamus takes a shot at Jorogumo and deals "minimum" damage that most of my other models have as their maximum. Bete Noire attempts some flanking business on Jorogumo, and the rest of my models are busy blocking the movement of Rogue Necromancy.

Asami summoned an Obsidian Oni, pushed it with her hair and then the thing charged Seamus who I thought was safe. The Oni flickered itself into nonexistence and set Gravedigger and Seamus on fire. This activation put Seamus effectively down to eight wounds, which isn't too bad but I used 2/3 of my soulstones on the very first turn of the game.

Turn 2

Bete Noire runs to engage Jorogumo. I wanted to at least make it a little more difficult for opponent to remove Gravedigger. Jorogumo had Bete bury herself, and Yokai did shenanigans and charged Gravedigger without scoring the kill. Dead Doxy charged Yokai in return, but didn't do much. Akaname charged Gravedigger and spilled some bile, and Gravedigger was at one hit point remaining with burning +2 and poison +1. Shadow Emissary eventually charged Gravedigger dead, and I replied by charging the dragon with Dead Dandy and Rogue Necromancy. They did a little something, although I got to taste a little bit of how annoying Terrifying can be.

Neither player scores points yet.

Turn 3

Seamus shoots the Yokai dead, and Dead Doxy climbs on top of the pitch black cube of darkest emptiness to pursue Shadow Emissary that had escaped there. Obsidian Oni was summoned on top of there, too, and soon Dead Doxy was extra dead. Oni decided to shoot Dead Dandy and burn him a little, but instead exploded the jolly dilettante off the board.

Rogue Necromancy comes to the cube, too, oblivious to the fact that it was about to be taken as a prisoner.

On the other hand, my Rotten Belle managed to dive to hug Asami for Catch & Release, so both players scored two points.

Turn 4

Rogue Necromancy swipes the Shadow Emissary dead and pounces on Obsidian Oni. Bete Noire tickles Jorogumo a little, and Seamus comes in for the kill now that the spider was engaged by Redchapel model. Only that, well, Jorogumo didn't die and slapped Bete dead with six damage when she was at four remaining. Then it charges Seamus and leaves him at two hit points remaining.

Unless I forget something, it must have been Copycat Killer who killed Jorogumo. Or maybe Seamus had not yet been activated? Oh yeah. It was probably so that Copycat Killer put Seamus to prepare his kill, but then Jorogumo activated, butchered Bete Noire and gave a scare for Seamus.

Asami and Obsidian Oni killed the Rotten Belle who had been designated for Catch & Release, so no points for me from there.

But both players had destroyed enough models to gain another point from strategy, so it was 3-3.

Turn 5

Seamus starts the turn, walks, teleports on top of the cube in the middle, shoots Obsidian Oni that was engaging Rogue Necromancy, and then teleports back to safety. I hadn't used the teleportation ability much earlier, because I had thought it required to move within 1" of the same terrain from where the ability was used, but now it really dawned on me how difficult it is to catch Seamus.

Anyway, I hadn't placed him safe enough, so Asami does double walk and summons Obsidian Oni to him. Copycat Killer walks double and places Seamus safe... again. This time actually safe.

Opponent moves Akaname next. This allowed for Rogue Necromancy to escape from being taken as a prisoner.

Theorycrafting here, had Obsidian Oni come and engage Rogue Necromancy, it could have ambushed itself away from melee and ran off anyway.

So in the end it was a close game with 4-3 victory for Resurrectionists. And as it hinged only on if opponent had juggled Jorogumo's flicker tokens differently, it was probably our closest game yet.

Kalmana Retreat 16-19 and the shame

Lantern Year 16 Showdown(s) Manhunter Level 3 & Slenderman Level 2

Cardani, Stapura, Ouglu and Kalnetan stand against the newest threat that has come to collect the lives of survivors. Somehow this Manhunter seems a little different, the veins of his muscular body bulging in vivid black.

As survivors prepare to fight the Manhunter, Kalnetan picks up the newfound Knowledge Worm, and since his eyesight is scarred we may never know what he saw in the maggot, but as it happened - Kalnetan ate the vermin, becoming Necromancer in the process.

It's odd how I keep underestimating these survivors. I was expecting a tough fight, but... Showdown lasted three rounds, with only damage to survivors coming from brain damage of Gun Action and stakes. Monster reactions ate through two Dried Acanthuses and... that's it. Ouglu deals the killing blow with Vespertine Bow, and as a consequence learns the true meaning of war. He teaches some of it to Flopura, Stapura and Murrano. Only outsiders can understand these ruthless views of life.

Perhaps Manhunter went down so easily because greater danger was lying within. After the decomposes into a husk, survivors are struck with dread as Slenderking starts to materialize in front of their eyes!

Danalne, being the savior, woke up to the situation first and took up arms, calling Ouglu, Cardani and Stapura to fight alongside her to repel this double-invader.

And what a horrifying fight it was.

The Slenderking just kept out of reach, and kept ensnaring the survivors time after time. There even was an occasion when every single survivor was ensnared into the moist void (and much to my amazement, everyone escaped with their Struggle -roll) and when survivors finally were about to engage the monster, about fourth card from the top of the hit location deck was the trap.

Danalne fished out the trap fairly well with her effective evasion +6, but that trap is terrifying in its own right to all other survivors, too.

Things started to look a bit brighter when Cardani managed to deal eight wounds in two attacks. Out of the monster's sixteen wounds nine were dealt by Cardani, and seven were by Ouglu with Verdant Bow.

I couldn't have done it without Necromancer's Eye, though. Once the trap was gone, it was no longer the fourth card from the top. It was the third. And from then on Danalne used Necromancer's Eye to get everyone else three hit locations worth of chances. This was slowed down when the elderly savior received Ghostly Beauty disorder from gripping Cardani back to reality.

Settlement had developed a second pair of Bandages for the Manhunter fight. Good thing I had them here, because three out of four survivors would have died to bleed tokens alone if Ouglu and Stapura weren't there to staunch the flow.

Rewards were whopping four dark waters, love juice and iron. So at least there was something coming from the epic battle everyone forgot right away after the victory.

Lantern Year 17: Hunt Re-enactment

The last showdown was so challenging, yet nobody remembers it because Slenderking made everyone forget. However, something remains in muscle memory. Favorite survivor, Cardani and least favorite survivor, Lonili re-enact the entire affair. Magnificently so, and Cardani walks even bolder than before with her Last Man Standing fighting art. Apparently her earlier experience with shadow puppets paid off.

Seven endeavors.
1: To go along with the hunt re-enactment festivities, settlement finally innovates Cooking.
2: Ouglu learns Extra Sense.
3: Flopura, Stapura, Murrano led by Ouglu gather in the War Room to make a plan for the upcoming hunt.
4-6: Cardani enters Barber Surgeon to relieve her obsession with vermins. All three times fail, except that the last one gives intracranial hemorrhage. Enerwarbabolacty receives an additional letter to her name, and re-roll result cures Cardani of her ailment.
7 Enewarbabolactyl

Lantern Year 17 hunt & showdown - Dung Beetle Knight level 1
Flopura, Ouglu, Cardani and Stapura start to hunt a level 1 Dung Beetle Knight, for the first time ever.

Ouglu meets a culinarist bee, which is the second time during this campaign. Now it will come and eat a survivor with Doomed Path at the end of next settlement phase.
Stapura encounters a bug man, but panics on sight. The bug man panics too, and Flopura finds its abandoned resin dung ball and investigates its inner workings.

Ouglu puts on a shadow puppet play during sonorous rest, which is a nice little adventurous play about heroes. However, this has a profound effect on Cardani.
She Cardani plucks out her eye in a moment of painful understanding. His courageous inner vision tells her to meet her fate on the fields of Sweet Battle.

Then Cardani is an opportunist and continues to hunt the stronger dung beetle knight. Showdown is ready to start.

Showdown itself, well, I overestimated the challenge. But other than that, Dung Beetle Knight seems like a monster that requires really careful movement or you take a metric ton of damage. A showdown lasting longer than two rounds sounds... scary. So many moments where things can go south, not to mention the difficulty of getting through Century Carapace.

In the aftermath Stapura received Age milestone and gained Infinite Lives. This can be a game-changer. As a result, both Flopura and Cardani had the courage to go spelunking.

Lantern Year 18 - Phantom

Apparently, phantom pays a visit each time I fail to have a proper challenge. So, I guess it's level 3 antelope next to get some much needed bones.

Eight endeavors.
1: Settlement innovates Saga.
2: To make use of the Saga, settlement needs new survivors to hear the tales! Matchmaker from Stapuran has Danarias and Ardanet to form a new family Sagasu. This fuses the lineages of Zamarotte and Masvar together. Danarda gains permanent accuracy while Anetarias gains Blotted Out.
3: Nightmare Training fails on Cardani
4: Nightmare Training makes Stapuran a club master!
5: Some leather curing to make Leather resource to develop Beacon Shield.
6: Scrap Smelting to gain 1x iron.
7: Nightmare Training teaches Ouglu weapon proficiency.
8: Shrine Ritual is a success.

Then, a culinarist bee appears and eats Nasalne, sharing the stew with Cardani, Random meal is Venison Oco Busco, and the old, ageless cannibal couldn't resist the old urge and tastes Nasalne for +1 permanent evasion.

Lantern Year 18 hunt & Showdown - Screaming Antelope level 3

Ouglu, Cardani, Stapuran and Anetarias begin the hunt for the Screaming Antelope.

Vomit Pile yields nothing when Anterias investigates it, and Lava Flows give are easy as a breeze to jump through. Ouglu finds some Dark Water from a puddle.

Lava Flows set a theme for this hunt, since Wildfire burned down both Mineral and Herb gathering, and removed one antelope hunt event card. Despite the bright, searing light survivors have stumbled upon during this hunt multiple times, Overwhelming Darkness sets inside the survivors' hearts. Cardani and Stapuran lose one point of courage from pleas of help that go unheard.

After Overwhelming darkness the path ahead seems endless. During Endless Walk, Stapuran thought he saw babies in between the cracks in the earth, but was gravely mistaken. Then among the arid landscape, survivors come across a dried up Salt Lake, which forces Cardani and Stapuran to lose a good chunk of their survival. Sonorous rest patches this up somewhat, but it doesn't help much when just as showdown is starting - they encounter the Salt Lake again! Despite all the randomizing I do, the result was a duplicate event from the pool of 168. Perhaps the survivors realized that thirsty antelope would soon take a turn for the nearest body of water.

This was the first hunt where the homebrew hunt event played a bigger role than the d100 hunt events, which I take as a good sign.

But the showdown begins!

... and what a flawless accomplishment it was! Game lasted around six rounds, and the Screaming Antelope didn't actually attack survivors even once. Sure it dealt damage with Diabolical, but I'm rather proud of how well I navigated through the showdown. Of course Antelope did what it could to help me... The AI card Bolt is exorbitant card to mitigate Diabolical. Cardani slays the beast.

It was a good thing, too, that survivors managed without getting attacked. The monster had four speed tokens in total. I think I gained far more resources from the level 2 fight, but I'm fine with not losing anybody.

Lantern Year 19 - Cracks in the Ground

One of the more... questionable settlement event doesn't ruin it for me this time. Without re-rolls the settlement gains Founding Stone, which will certainly come in handy. Secret Meeting started, and Ougrano met the Old Master and exchanged secrets. Another meeting is scheduled to Lantern Year 25, so, yeah. Wonder who the Old Master actually is. Certainly looks like Watcher awakened for a bit and tried to communicate.

Eight endeavors.

1: Settlement innovates Pictograph.
2: Cardani uses Nightmare Training to become Axe Master.
3: Cardani cooks Venison Oco Busco... apparently she has acquired a taste for it. Disappointed to find only beast inside, she gained +1 permanent evasion.
4: Anterias learns Extra Sense from statue.
5: Ouglu drums some survival for himself...
6: ... and uses Nightmare Training to train for some bow proficiency.
7: Stapuran's matchmaker has twins, Danet and Anarda Sagasu.
8: Shrine ritual is success.

Additionally, one Love Juice from storage becomes another pair of twins by Zamarias and Danalne.

Lantern Year 19 showdown - Slenderman level 3.

Ougrano, Murlu, Flowerista and Lonili are caught by the level 3 Slenderman. Yeah. A craven thing to do - to put four weak survivors with no chances to win against a tough nemesis. But with my limited experience against Slenderman, it just looks too tough for now. I'm leaving that fight to lantern year 23. I was mostly scared of that card Hounds, which kills any survivor who reaches insanity 15 - which I believe can happen, thanks to those hit locations that give +3. I need a little better damage dealers apart from Cardani to even the distribution of insanity.

Ougrano escapes with natural 10, while Murlu breaks her arm. Both of these survivors were present during LY 9 Slenderman encounter, so they had an idea what to expect. Or, they didn't. No-one remembers! Lonili becomes escapes by becoming delicious, and Flowerista is ensnared. She escapes easily, but is then mauled by her own insanity, breaking bone. She then successfully escapes with broken hand and broken leg. I double and triple checked, and consensus seems to be that survivors that ran away are returning survivors. I feel bad to gain these endeavors...

Lantern Year 20 - Nickname

So, the escapees receive nicknames for their cowardly flight. Lonili, Foolish Coward of the Lantern, has already once played the Slenderman in hunt re-enactment. Flowerista, Wise Fool of the Antelope received a rather cruel nickname considering her leg and arm were broken, and with gaping chest wound. Ougrano and Murlu were both Wise Savior of the Antelopes, perhaps because they had faced Slenderman before and made wise choice in leaving the scene.

Then settlement has seven unjust endeavors.

1: Settlement innovates Settlement Watch.
2: Dark Water Research is upgraded to level 2.
3: Love Juice is made with Pottery.
4: Light Forging to make Gloom Cream. Gloom Cream can have you lose hunt xp at the cost of understanding, which may soon come in handy with Stapuran.
5: Settlement builds Wet Resin Crafter.
6: War Room plan to hunt a level 2 Dung Beetle Knight is made.
7: Shrine ritual is a success.

Whenever next games happen, Ouglu, Cardani, Stapuran and Anetarias shall hunt for a level 2 Dung Beetle Knight.

*

Cardani Masvar, who has Binge-Eating disorder and Vermin Obsession. Let's not think how those two combine. Or heck. Let's do!
- Braved the Storm in the very first lantern year, but was blinded as a result. Later on her new body, this eye has healed.
- Was "blessed" by the Cleaner Birds during hunt for Gorm. Then she encountered Flesh Monolith, and during Unnatural Hunger she was one of the survivors who ate Mesul. Then, back in the settlement, she took what was left of Mesul and showed everyone how beneficial it is to eat corpses, and not disgusting at all.

- After coming back from the dead she has shown far less tendencies to feast on human flesh.
- Defended settlement from The Hand, and her efforts were so valiant that The Hand's thunderous applause nearly killed her - if it wasn't for the intervention of Newarbabolac, she'd have died.

- Enfeebled and Megalophobic disorder

Captain Aiakos vs Warwitch Deneghra

Played a 50 point game of Warmachine a few days ago. It was a Cryx vs Cryx match.

My list:
Captain Aiakos [+29]
- Nightmare [18]
- Reaper [13]
- Reaper [13]
- Satyxis Blood Priestess [4]
General Gerlak Slaughterborn [6]
Swamp Gobber River Raider [1]
Warwitch Siren [4]
Satyxis Raiders (max) [16]
- Satyxis Raider Sea Witch [4]

Opponent had:
Warwitch Deneghra [+26]
- Deathripper [6]
- Deathripper [6]
- Defiler [8]
- Reaper [13]
Wrong Eye [17]
Bane Warriors (min) [10]
Satyxis Blood Witches (min) [8]
Steelhead Riflemen (min) [8]

Scenario was the one from main rulebook where there is three flags in middle and you win with five control points.

Deneghra's forces outnumbered me heavily, and thus they were quite capable of overwhelming me in the scenario game. Opposing Cryx kept their distance, so it was difficult to get better mileage out of my forces. A deathripper came and arced Crippling Grasp onto Nightmare, and Bane Warriors on the left looked like serious trouble if Gerlak wouldn't take the whole unit down.

Satyxis Raiders removed half of Satyxis Blood Witches and Steelhead Riflemen. Reaper took a deathripper or defiler from the left, and the other Reaper tried to do the same to the arc node in the middle. But failed to wound. Gah! Well, I wanted the thing dead and was hoping for unrealistic miracles when I charged the deathripper with Nightmare.

Because next turn opponent used Deneghra's feat, and removed a vast majority of Satyxis Raiders and the Nightmare.

Reapers then tried to dismantle enemy Reaper, but under Deneghra's feat it proved to be too much of a challenge for them. Oh well, at least it was broken down to only movement system remaining. Warwitch Siren thins down some of the Bane Warriors, and last remaining Satyxis Raider goes and kills a Blood Witch.

Situation looked bad, and while Bane Warriors failed to dispatch General Gerlak Slaughterborn, the general was a little shy it seems - this was his second game, after all - and failed to kill even one Bane Warrior.

Snapjaw charged one of my Reapers but didn't do much. As a consequence I was able to remove Wrong Eye, Snapjaw and what was left of the enemy Reaper. Aiakos personally went and wrecked last remaining enemy arc node, and suddenly attrition looked pretty good for me.

However, I had fallen so far behind in scenario that the Satyxis Blood Witches were able to just come and say "hi, Deneghra wants her helljack back" to Aiakos, winning the game for Deneghra.
