Kalmana Retreat 12-15

Lantern Year 12 hunt & showdown:

Cardani, Cardetan, Stapura and Danalne hunt for level 2 Gorm in order to scare off the entire Gorm herd from ruining the weather in such an aggravating manner.

Hunt phase went fairly as safely as one can expect. Mourning Bull gave some brain damage, and Overwhelming Darkness had Cardetan go on a homicidal streak and lash out some damage to every survivor. Reflecting on his deeds, he made a shadow puppet play for the other survivors, demonstrating his Ruthlessness. It was infectious, though, as Cardani regressed back into being Combo-Master and Danalne received Crazed. Danalne found a broken lantern near a broken lantern oven that had been ravaged by the Gorm. At least Kalmani Retreat has been more fortunate. However, this settlement appeared to have been right next to the entrance to Fetid Grotto.

Approaching the cave somehow made sense. All survivors who had waist gear removed their armor points and used them as protection against the noxious elements. Danalne, who did not have waist armor, would have coughed her lungs out if it wasn't for Dried Acanthus.

Showdown was quick, but terrifying. Opening move of the Gorm, Wallop against Stapura, already had heavy body injury scaring my up-and-coming club master. The survivors tried to burn their survival points by buying extra attacks - or, at least Cardetan did, who once again had a grand total of eight wounds done to Gorm, with Cardani in second place with five and Stapura third with two.

Showdown lasted for five rounds only. First Gorm did Wallop, second it started hiccuping, and continued to hiccup with Thunder Foot also kicking in. Two last turns it attempted to scratch survivors who were dashing out of reach.

Danalne had a dubious role in the showdown - she was to fish out the trap card. Lure Paroxysm gave a heavy hit to her skull helm and knocked down both her and Cardetan.

The master hunter was down! Time for Cardani to steal the kill, aided by Stapura who got his weapon proficiency eligibility on the last possible turn. Survivors emerge from the cave victorious, but at a heavy cost. Cardani, who deals the killing blow, has the corrosive bile from Gorm to burst all over her, scarring her and giving her -1 permanent strength. She gains +1 permanent strength from triggering second age, so she didn't exactly lose anything - except for the benefit from milestone, of course.

Stapura convinces other survivors not to kill the pitifully squealing baby gorms, and all receive Honorable disorder as a result.

Lantern Year 13 - Dark Dentist

A total of six endeavors were generated for this lantern year.

1st: Settlement innovates Nightmare Training.
2nd Stapura convinces the other outsiders to breed. Ougrano and Murlu receive Murrano.
3rd Settlement pays the hefty price to special innovate Scrap Smelting.
4th Cardetan learn Extra Sense fighting art.
5th Lucky Intimacy from Augury was not so lucky, and Newarbabolact uses her re-roll to save Murlu. The couple received Ouglu instead.
6th Enewarbabolact uses some drums to get even more confused about her possible identity.

Then settlement has to face a familiar threat in the form of The Hand.

Cardani, Cardetan, Enerwababolact and Danalne encounter him, and The Hands little funny trip to underdeveloped settlements was inconsequential. Danalne drew all attacks towards her, as she had most of all auras and most armor points. She didn't get hit even once. Some survival and five points of brain damage were all damage that was received. Only casualty was The Hand being a sore loser and removing one Dried Acanthus by punting a lantern straight at Cardani's face. The Hand must really hate her, considering she got nearly killed two years ago.
All participants received strength except for the star of the match, Danalne, who gained the blessings of the loudest applause. She now has admirable value of +4 permanent evasion.

Lantern Year 14: Elder Council

Elder council tells the story of Beast of Sorrow, which is kind of nice addition to campaign set-up. A lone White Lion is definitely a stuff of legends, when there have been none to begin with.

And as settlement innovates Pottery, maybe next I'll be able to hunt the Gigalion, too. Because this definitely means a second hunt for Screaming Antelope, this time with level 2.

Six endeavors were generated again, but one was reserved to settlement event.
1st Elder council tells the tale.
2nd Settlement innovates Pottery.
3rd Pottery is used straight away to ferment love juice, which turns into twins for Danalne and Zamarias.
4th Stapura listen to shared experience of Kalnetan to trigger his second age milestone.
5th Stapura learns Extra Sense fighting art from statue.
6th Shrine is used successfully.

I'm actually thinking my survivors might actually be able to take on level 3 antelope, although Cardetan would need to lose some insanity for it. That's not possible right now, so it'll be a plain level 2 hunt with Cardani, Stapura, Murrano and Ouglu.

Year 14 hunt & showdown

First I was bothered about the Migration of antelopes. Then Voice of the Wind has Murrano stuck with repeating just his name whenever he tries to communicate. A rumbling stampede, however, begins the showdown immediately and when Cardani slaps the antelope with five damage on a speed 4 attack, I feel bad that I didn't take higher challenge. Had I only known Stampede would begin the showdown so early...

The antelopes performance is pitiable. Only a few points of damage were caused by trample, and one trap removed four points of insanity from Stapura. Murrano dealt the final point of damage, and the survivors in question vowed to seek for greater challenge. Maybe sunstalker level 2, or even Lion God...? Anyway. Lantern year passes.

Lantern Year 15 - Phantom

Phantom sets insanity to 0 for all the returning survivors. Perhaps their guilty conscience punished them. Settlement develops the Hours Ring, so I'm pretty confident now to take on the Lion God. Also, since settlement could muster the resources to build Blacksmith, the Iron reward seems ideal.

1st Settlement innovates Arena.
2nd Settlement builds Blacksmith
3rd Matchmaker Stapura makes family Gnotti with Flowerista by receiving Flopura, a half-plant child.
4th Cardani attempts some Nightmare Training and receives strength.
5th Cardetan tries to use Nightmare Training, but nearly gets killed as a result.
6th Shrine ritual is a success.

Next hunt is going to be the Lion God level 1.

LY 15 Hunt & Showdown
Ouglu, Danalne, Cardetan and Cardani survive otherwise uneventful hunt phase, except that Danalne encountered some mushrooms that implanted something in her.

Then the, uh, showdown.

Turns out first six and then four damage to head was too much for Kalnetan to handle. Luckily he made five wounds to the Lion God on the first turn. If he only would have lived... But didn't, thanks to some poor monster reactions, coupled with poor hit locations.

After that survivors went on berserk mode or at least Cardani did. She'd have to do eleven more wounds to Lion God pretty much alone. Danalne and Ouglu both had hemophobia from mining operation gone wrong, so they were mostly out of the game until the very late stages.

Much to my surprise Cardani looked like she was going to solo a God. That was until she ended up with four bleed tokens. Whiplash is such a harsh card, and even more so when 66% of your team is hemophobic. However, Danalne was able to dash to soak up last remaining AI card that was a basic relentless card. Since there were no other cards left in AI deck, I figured that Relentless would not trigger.

Looking back now, Danalne wasted one use of Grace of Dormenatus. Now she's going to pop it once more and then be gone. Had she not received post-traumatic stress from her encounter with the fungi, she could've done that next year against Manhunter level 3, but, well, what can you do.

However, I couldn't know the trap card was at the very bottom of the Hit Location deck. I thought I needed a lot of armor points just to survive Vengeance, but turned out Cardani was able to slay the monster with only one card remaining in hit location deck. Precise cut. And Necromancer's Eye is finally in settlement storage!

Lantern Year 16 - Plague

Alright. So now the downfall began. Zamarias, Newarbabolact, Kalovim, Murlu suffer plague, and Newarbabolact nearly gets killed herself, but saves herself with the re-roll from Infinite Lives. None of the nominated survivors die, but have to miss next hunt.

Two Love Juices turn into Ardanet, Vararda and Masneta Masvar.

Four endeavors.
1st Enewarbabolacty drums for another re-roll.
2nd Settlement innovates Sacrifice for upcoming Gracious Host.
3rd Murrano fails to study the sculpture.
4th Shrine ritual is a success

Next is coming the fight with Manhunter and then right after fight with Slenderman.

*Kalmana Retreat original survivors*

All of the above have unbroken lineage from the previous settlement, Kalmana Deluge. Below are original people of Kalmana Retreat.

*

Cardani Masvar, who has Binge-Eating disorder and Vermin Obsession. Let's not think how those two combine. Or heck. Let's do!
- Braved the Storm in the very first lantern year, but was blinded as a result. Later on her new body, this eye has healed.
- Was "blessed" by the Cleaner Birds during hunt for Gorm. Then she encountered Flesh Monolith, and during Unnatural Hunger she was one of the survivors who ate Mesul. Then, back in the settlement, she took what was left of Mesul and showed everyone how beneficial it is to eat corpses, and not disgusting at all.
- Fought off spiderlings during their invasion.
- Came back from the dead with her brain recorded by Sleeping Virus Flower, and then reconfigured an unnamed survivor's brain to match hers.
After coming back from the dead, formed Masvar family with Kalnetan.

- Surastus the Bone Witch came and fueled Cardani's desire to eat human flesh. Brutally she murdered Nengar, a promising axe-master. Settlement did not approve her skull-eating habits and murdered her before other damage could be done. But this only grows the flowers in her heart.
- After coming back from the dead she has shown far less tendencies to feast on human flesh.
- Defended settlement from The Hand, and her efforts were so valiant that The Hand's thunderous applause nearly killed her - if it wasn't for the intervention of Newarbabolac, she'd have died.
- Remembered the White Secret and got lost the ability to age naturally. Gold Smoke Knight... here we come!
- Investigated Golden Light.
- Caustic bile from slaying level 2 gorm scarred her, giving -1 permanent strength.

*Lineage of Plants*

Enewarbabolacty, a plant-based survivor who breathes new lifetimes into her as the seasons pass. This is probably what also gives her Ghostly Beauty. Her name was originally Warbabo, but continues to grow as she gains new lifetimes.
- Is the daughter of Worba and Warbo, two survivors who were raised from a flower seed.
- Hunter Gorm on LY 6, and slayed a Gorm on LY 7.

Dead or missing survivors of note:

Nengar, blotted out berserker with a Purpose and the firstborn of the settlement. Vestiphobia.
- First departed on a hunt on lantern year 3 against Screaming Antelope. Year 5 against Flower Knight, and years 6+7 against Gorm. He is also a Butcher survivor.
- Fought off the spiderlings, but got frenzied in the process and killed an unnamed survivor.
- Craving for human flesh in the form of Marrow Hunger.
- Murdered by Cardani. Purpose fulfilled, I suppose.
- +3 permanent strength, +1 permanent speed.

Qyillus, one of the original four from both Deluge and Retreat
Cause of death: Valiantly defended the settlement from spiderlings during Season of the Spiderling, failing in that but perhaps her example encouraged the remaining survivors to try extra hard and achieve victory?
- Has taught the secrets of language twice to different settlements an spoke some reason to the settlement during Endless Screams.
- Considering the above, no surprise she won debate contest during Triathlon of Death, and was third during race contest and lost fight contest. After all, she wasn't that much of a fighter anyway if we read into her Enfeebled disorder.
- Has hunted Gorm, and slain one Gorm and one Screaming Antelope.
- Enfeebled and Megalophobic disorder
- +1 permanent accuracy, +1 permanent strength. 3 courage (matchmaker), 3 understanding (tinker).

Warba and Warbo, the progenitors of plant based survivors in Kalmana Deluge.

Nasanovim Minovas, mourning parent of a child lost she can't clearly remember any more. One of the original four of Retreat.
- Encountered an elderly bee that doomed her and her future children.
- Believes she has a higher purpose, though, and has Quixotic disorder. She has become Tenacious and is Blotted Out.
- Shared the feast of Mesul during Unnatural Hunger, triggering Cannibalize.
- Won the fight contest, and placed second during race contest and third during debate contest in Triathlon of Death.
- Deranged expression. With a history like hers, I'd have one too.
- Forgot her name from first non-violent visit of Slenderking.
- Made a sculpture of her vague memories about the Slenderking, imbuing it with her Extra Sense.
- Killed the Slenderking on lantern year 9.
- Was slain by Hooded Knight on lantern year 9.
- Has two children with Kalnetan.
- Has hunted Gorm thrice and is a LY 4 Butcher and LY 5 Manhunter survivor. She killed LY 8 Gorm.
- +1 permanent accuracy, +2 permanent strength and +2 evasion, courage 7 (matchmaker) and understanding 3 (explore).
- Doomed Path: You may always choose Path of Doomed during Overwhelming Darkness. If you do, gain +1 on your roll. When you are one of the parents during Intimacy, the children will inherit this ability.

*

Logar, the twice widowed apathetic and megalophobic trailblazer. He is also a seasoned hunter without much actual hunt experience.
- Is the first father of the settlement, and has four children - Nengar, Rastgar, Lostus and Suragar with two different mothers, one of whom is dead and another has been banished from the settlement. No wonder he's apathetic.
- Won the race contest, but placed third during fight contest and lost the debate contest during Triathlon of Death. Especially debate result seems thematic - he was the only participant from Kalmana Retreat, others were from the first settlement.
- Is health-conscious after watching four survivors die from Necrotoxic Mistletoe.
- +1 permanent movement, +1 permanent strength, +1 permanent evasion.
- Hunted Gorm on lantern year 2 and is LY 5 Manhunter survivor.
- Turned into statue on lantern year 10 hunt.

Cardetan Masvar, the first survivor whose lineage mingled with that of another lineage. He's the son of Cardani and Kalnetan.
- Took part in dreaming the hunt for Screaming Antelope in vivid detail.
- Has heard the forbidden word.
- Took part in shadow puppet play, twice. Became Ruthless as a result.
- Dealt killing blow to Manhunter on Lantern Year 10.
- Dealt killing blow to Phoenix on lantern year 11.
- Hunted level 2 gorm on Lantern Year 12
- Took part in The Hand's playful little visit during LY 13.
- Honorable from not slaying infant gorm. So he's honorable and ruthless at the same time.
- Nearly got killed while trying to use Nightmare Training on LY 15.
- Died to Lion God on LY 16.
- +2 permanent accuracy, +3 permanent strength, +1 permanent evasion
- 2 courage, 3 understanding (analyze)
- Is training bow with four dots in proficiency.

*

Surastus, a banished survivor who tinkered with lanterns and got disfigured. Before departing, suppose she was the "old crone" that offered Sleeping Virus Flower for Cardani. She's revisited her settlement, and caused Cardani to murder Nengar. Scarred Kalnetan's eyes.

Butcher Showdown

It sure took a long time to finish, but finally another Kingdom Death stop motion instance is here.

The settlement in question is long gone, but their memory still lives in over 700 individual frames.

I mixed up the axe-users names in the texts, and at least two dice can be seen in the pictures, but other than that it's a little smoother than first video. But the Butcher miniature without moving parts isn't as evocative as Gorm is, so I don't know which would be my favorite if I had to pick one.

Goreshade vs Twins on vassal

Played a 75 point game of Warmachine against a friend in Vassal. Lists involved were:

Me:
[Theme] Scourge of the Broken Coast
Goreshade the Bastard [+27]
- Helldiver [6]
- Leviathan [16]
- Reaper [13]
- Slayer [10]
- Stalker [8]
- Satyxis Blood Priestess [0(4)]
Axiara Wraithblade [0(6)]
General Gerlak Slaughterborn [0(6)]
Misery Cage [2]
Satyxis Raider Captain [4]
Swamp Gobber River Raider [1]
Warwitch Siren [4]
Black Ogrun Boarding Party (max) [11]
Black Ogrun Ironmongers [6]
Satyxis Raiders (max) [16]
- Satyxis Raider Sea Witch [4]

Opponent:
[Theme] Children of the Dragon
Saeryn & Rhyas, Talons of Everblight [+24]
- Archangel [35]
- Typhon [20]
- Zuriel [18]
Annyssa Ryvaal [8]
Blighted Nyss Warlord [0(5)]
Blighted Nyss Warlord [0(5)]
Craelix, Fang of Everblight [0(6)]
Blighted Nyss Raptors (max) [18]

Legion started game. I tried to pick the side which would mitigate opponent's eyeless sight a bit. Don't know if that worked.

Anyway, in short summary: Slayer was shot off the board, then Reaper was shot off the board, then objective was shot off the board, then Satyxis and Gerlak were shot off the board. But that's not nearly all of my models, no! Because unit of Bane Warriors were melee'd off the board and so was Stalker and Swamp Gobber River Raider.

Alright, I'm making it sound a lot worse than it actually was. Slayer went down all too easily, but the remaining pieces at least involved some degree of piece trading.

On my second turn my objective gave Eyeless Sight for Reaper, who plucked off Anyssa Ryvaal. Satyxis Raiders charge and miss Zuriel, which prompts Dodge from the nephilim.

Leviathan deals some random eight points of damage to Archangel.

Then I lose most of my Satyxis, Reaper, and received some solid damage to Leviathan. I was rather skeptical if I'd have a game anymore, but Satyxis Raider Captain gives me a chance when she manages to shoot Craelix down with her hand cannon, and remaining Satyxis Raiders killed Nyss Warlord. That was one point for me, too!

Feated Bane Warriors and Leviathan take down Typhon, and Stalker goes to take out another Nyss Warlord. Sure, I was thinning down some inconsequential models but Zuriel and Archangel were questions I had no answer for.

Then I lost Stalker to charging Raptors, what was left of Satyxis unit to Zuriel and Gerlak to Archangel. Rhyas took a two fury costing Flashing Blade to get rid of whole unit of Bane Warriors.

Next turn I score additional point from killing enemy objective with conjoined efforts by Helldiver and Leviathan. Black Ogrun Boarding Party Pirates shoot one Raptor dead and charging Axiara kills another - which leaves just one Raptor contesting the zone. Leviathan might have helped there, but thanks to poor rolls all of its three shots and all of Helldivers attacks had to go towards the objective.

While it was interesting game, now it started to look like I was going down fast. Rhyas took down the hero of this match, Leviathan, and Zuriel shot dead the Satyxis Captain. Zuriel was now within charge range of Goreshade, so I decided to go for it. If a miracle would happen and Goreshade survived, then it would.

But looked like it wouldn't, when Goreshade had to spend all but one of his focus to kill the beast.

Oh well. Game over, when both Rhyas and Saeryn charged him.

Lamentation worked great throughout the game. Not only it had its psychological factor, but even if I had paid upkeep cost (which I didn't thanks to Blood Priestess), I would have gained more from the spell than I would have spent.

This time I remembered about Gang Fighter, though. It was just that there was not a single melee that involved both my warjacks and my warrior models.

Rogue Vassal

Because of stuff happening in the real outside world, I dusted off Vassal as a gaming platform.

I have wanted to try Malifaux against a broader scope of players, so it was a natural choice for starters at least.

But online gaming with voice communication and all isn't my favorite. Also not knowing what the heck enemy things do can prove problematic when you can't easily enough look at the cards. Also... the most wicked thing of all... new and strange, unknown people. Eeek!

Anyway, we both were new to Malifaux Vassal, so we agreed on a smaller game of 25 soulstones with henchmen as the leaders.

My team was:

Madame Sybelle as the leader
Dead Doxy
Rotten Belle
Rogue Necromancy
Schemes: Outflank, Assassinate

Opponent had
The Jury as the leader
3x Death Marshals
Death Marshal recruiter
Schemes: Breakthrough, Assassinate

Strategy was Reckoning and I chose Outflank and Assassinate as my schemes. Poor choice, looking back now. How am I going to put pressure on enemy leader, if I'm already spread thin on the centerline?

Well... by being extra aggressive with Rogue Necromancy and Madame Sybelle, of course! What could go wrong?

The volume of attacks opponent had made a serious dent in Rogue Necromancy, and it ended up dying all too easily. Madame Sybelle tried to rescue it with I've Got Your Back, but the long range of death marshals was inescapable. However, after losing the mighty beast she unleashed one from inside of her and killed Death Marshal Recruiter and a Death Marshal.

Madame Sybelle also received some heavy damage from enemy shooting, and it didn't help that I forgot all about her Terrifying.

However, it wasn't completely one-sided slaughter there. With only a little better luck and more proper triggers Rogue Necromancy could have been a whirlwind of projectile vomit and sharp claws.

Opponent was able to score both points from Breakthrough and Assassinate, as well as two points from Reckoning. I had only two, with the last chance of three taking away from me by a Death Marshal shooting Dead Doxy dead.

Looking back now, it would have been more advantageous to heal Rogue Necromancy with one point by Madame Sybelle instead of using I've Got Your Back, as I had quite a few correct suits in my hand at the time.

But yeah. As a platform Vassal is still okay. Only voice communication is troublesome if there is any lag, and via discord servers overseas there is bound to be. I'll probably have to try a few more times to make my mind over this.

Total Eclipse

Alright, lately here has been a lot (at least to my standards) of painting updates. That's because I've been progressing in some of the more eccentric figures - I rarely do updates for Warmachine models because there are so common on my painting table. But the rare the piece, the more likely I'm going to bother brewing up a blog entry.

And I've been doing Kingdom Death models for a while now. If it wasn't for this beauty of a model, I'd probably skip this.

But not for Sunstalker.

I think the first three expansions I ever bought were Lonely Tree, Lion God and the Sunstalker, so it's been waiting a long, long time for some paint. And it probably still would have if it wasn't for a few days I spent feverishly with the brush. I don't think I've painted like that since my early 20's, so I don't know what happened.

Anyway, overall I'm pleased with the results. I had originally wanted some glowy spots to be bright, but they ended up too dark. I didn't want to ruin the model with thicker paint than that, so I let it stay relatively dark. The hood of hands was experimental, and I'm relieved how it turned out. To me it looks neat, and the bright white finger nails give it a more finished touch.

But here it is. The Sunstalker.
