Eleven and counting

Lantern Year 17 hunt & showdown: Frogdog level 2

Phobaro, Vanqusha, Leihovia and Rofiheen hunt the Frogdog.

Phobaro falls in love with a rock. Settlement does innovate drums, so there's that. Bouncing Leaves take a re-roll from Leihovia, as she didn't want that broken arm. One of the better outcomes during hunt was to ambush the Frogdog with dead monster's stench.

Two survivors lost their survival at Overwhelming Darkness, and one halved it. That's just... great.

At least Leihovia descended to Worm Tunnels, only to become Enfeebled. She got +1 strength token from eating a bony protrusion.

My hopes weren't high for the showdown.

And early on it did look like the dice have just grown to hate me. Those 3+ wound rolls failed half of the time. Only 2+ was performing any good.

Frog's direct attacks were a non-issue, even when they came out of traps. Throughout the entire showdown only one attack carried through to armor points after dodges and whatnot?

... and yet it was intense and distressing. Early on Indigestion came up, so that sphincter just wouldn't shut up! It was a hair's breath away that survivors would have been farted into oblivion. When showdown ended, Leihovia (who suffered intestinal prolapse... from a fart... I don't want to know how) had four stink tokens, and only one location that would be able to take the stink. Leather Armor set had reduced to one, two or no points remaining in locations with two stink. They were fine. But Gorm set guy with leather shield had multiple heavy levels and four stink, archer had only one armor point, light injury levels and two stink tokens.

I don't think I could have done it if tactic had not been Attack Pattern. However... Leihovia finally got the Fist & Tooth mastery. Finally!

And one of the lesser survivors even got Otherworldly Luck

Lantern Year 18: Dark Dentist

1: Settlement innovates INNER LANTERN FINALLY.
2: Phobaro scavenges a scrap
3-4: Phobaro attempts face painting for intimacy, succeeding once.
5: Phobaro paints even more faces, this time for battle.

Phobaro and Vanqusha drank a love juice and did a new kid, Vanbaro, as a result.

Settlement develops Grappleclaw, Frogdog head and vest and Lure Lantern.

Lantern Year 18 hunt & showdown: Dragon King level 1

Since Goliheen has sworn to not hunt anyone else, I do a quick Dragon King. He is accompanied by Lostit, Defeadred and Vanqusha.

And what a hunt it was!

Lostit stumbled upon doppel den, and only Goliheen did not get transformed into an evil doppelganger. So there was now murder on the timeline.

Titans in the dark gave evil Defeadred a point of movement... not that it mattered much, because right after Lostit and Defeadred leaped into lava river. I assume purposefully.

Vanqusha and Goliheen were left alone to fight the Dragon King. Last hunt card was a crypt, which the survivors defiled just out of spite.

To their defense, hunters did score three wounds and even impressed Lordly Roar out of the deck... right before dealing the killing blow to last survivor.

I took an additional casualty to get a million endeavors from being defeated.

Lantern Year 19 - Season of the Spiderling

HOO BOY. Five deaths from showdown, and now four more from settlement event. And then there is murder on the timeline... And murdered got exiled. Eleven deaths in one go! That just might be the record.

So, settlement got seventeen endeavors.

That gave settlement four more survivors, Abando, Bailaut, Tappi-O and Hävi-ö. One endeavor went into battle paint. Settlement has now a healthy population of eight. Or that at least would have been, had the year been normal.

Instead, I noticed in time that Slenderman ambushed my four person settlement right away.

Survivors managed two wounds in to the monster before everything went dark.

So, here's the showdowns of this rather long-running campaign:

1: White Lion level 1
2: Gorm level 1
3: Gorm level 1
4: Butcher level 1
5: Gorm level 1

Maurala Epilogue

During friend's visit we finished up our long standing Kingdom Death campaign.

Lantern Year 19 Nemesis Showdown - King's Man level 2

We brought our A-team of Moldonial, Maxaria, Brix and blue savior Hopeanuoli to smash and blast King's Man beyond recognition.

The plan was executed flawlessly. After first two or three rounds King's Man was mercilessly beaten down to it's knees with over half of its health done as damage.

But by then, King's Man was really, really pissed off by Moldonial's clumsy but deadly attacks. It decided to show some real skill to this annoying usurper and drew Perfect Thrust after players had got too confident and didn't bother with Rawhide Headband.

And, by chance, Moldonial was standing in just the right spot to receive three severe body injuries. So, our amazing flower powered zombie that had died during Gigalion to first severe roll he had had to make, repeated this pattern of behavior and went down with the first roll.

Oopsie.

Fortunately we still had fair chances, as Maxaria was able to wound with just 2+ even when attacking from King's Man's front. She also had Arithmophilia, so her movement would never drop to zero. Vespertine Bow had decent enough chances of wounding, too, and Hopeanuoli the blue savior had a total of six blue affinities, so had the possibility to inflict three criticals in a row.

Maxaria, however, took her sweet time in acquiring King's Step and she was not impervious to King's Man's attacks with only total evasion of +2. There was time pressure for sure.

Hopeanuoli wasted both of his Lucernae attacks. Well, first one did two wounds but didn't do any impactful criticals effects with those - and second Lucernae attack happened when King's Man had knocked Maxaria too far away to reach him even with dash, and with movement of one Brix would not be able to reach even aim range of 9 with Vespertine Bow. Hopeanuoli checked the battle tempo locations and disappeared.

In the end, Brix was not able to hand too many brain traumas from Hymn of Silence, and left Maxaria alone to duel King's Man. It went kind of fine, although Maxaria did get disemboweled after a while. She passed those severe injury rolls admirably, but without bandages there is a strict limit on how many of those you can take even if you somehow dodge rolling 1-2. In the end Maxaria succumbed to Bleed tokens after bringing King's Man down to zero AI cards remaining.

Lantern Year 20 - Clinging Mist

Wow! Clinging Mist! Time to start new settlement, hard mode? Nope, we rolled a seven and Pudge doused himself in urine.

Just in time to attack the Watcher. We thought it best to end the campaign in style and challenge The Watcher right away, because two full party wipes seemed too much in the long run.

Lantern Year 20 nemesis showdown: The Watcher

Pudge, Oda, Ischmo and Scheppo were to save Maurala from the ultimate existential threat.

... and were we surprised! We had no serious survivors or great equipment, no twilight sword, nothing. And yet, turn after turn, the four heroic survivors not only survived, but even put a dent in Watcher's lanterns here and there. Thanks to ghost citizens survivors were able to shave almost half of Watcher's health away before first survivor, Vespertine Bow using Scheppo died to blood clot.

Ischmo, who had Rib Blade, lost the will to live after losing Scheppo and was the next to go. But hot damn, The Watcher  had only five health remaining by then! And we still had Counter-weighed Axe online.

Endless Inhalation had slowly been draining survival points from survivors, not to mention the "lose two survival or die" hit locations. With his last survival points Pudge did a heroic activation by rolling a natural ten with regular attack and natural ten with surge attack, right before Oda died.

Survival-less Pudge with only a few points of insanity against The Watcher who had only three wounds remaining. Stuff of legends! Time for wonders, miracles, even!

Well, it would have certainly been epic to win The Watcher with a population of -24 or so, but it was not to be.

After six years of sporadic play, last lantern light of Maurala settlement disappeared in a wisp of smoke.

Wow it broke

Finally the last few lantern years of Enerva settlement of Kingdom Death.

 Lantern Year 28 - King's Man level 3

Menoloromias, Laifuseuskaja, Syllogi and Voxanius all go through a cycle of brain traumas. Without that particular mechanic King's Man would not have offered any real challenge, but now there was at least a sense of urgency - only available re-roll was on Laifuseuskaja and he would have to save it for himself in any case.

Laifuseuskaja took a permanent evasion from a hit location.

Menoloromias tossed a Founding Stone when the King's Man was at last remaining wound, thus getting afflicted with the King's Curse. But he is close to retirement anyway.

Lantern Year 29 - Open Maw

Settlement event was Open Maw. Lepuri, thinking he was immortal, went to check the opening. Soon enough the mouth chomped on him not once but twice - on the five dice I rolled, there were two pairs of double.

1: Lepuri jumps into the Open Maw in search of the lamplighter.
2-3: Voxanius investigates two cocoon membranes and two broken lanterns beneath Exhausted Lantern Hoard.
4-6: Scrap smelting for five iron.
7-8: Face painting for battle.
9: Nightmare training x3, ends in 1.
10: Petal Spiral for Naoran, fails.
11: War Room plan is made.
12: Shrine Ritual is success.

So, I needed a bunch of bones for finishing my first ever lantern armor set. Gigalion is likely the best bet because of various guaranteed teeth and claws.

Lantern Year 29 hunt & showdown - Gigalion level 3:

Laifuseuskaja, Hovelina, Chanial and Tranaree start the hunt.

First Laifuseuskaja encounters aromatic breeze, which actually was a Gregalope. Next the showdown begins with Ground Fighting in play. And then... a time lapse.

Showdown begins!

Because of Ground Fighting in play, the smart cat was on top of the deck but never drawn... did I just encounter a glitch?

And to make matters worse, there was testicles coming up in hit location deck, so Laifuseuskaja was able to get a non-stop priority token. Sheesh. At least random terrain offered only debris and toppled pillars.

The cat got nine wounds and two persistent injuries in before it sprinted to table edge. I felt sorry for it. But I really need those bones...

The showdown was a sad joke with the only damage being brain damage from Golden Eyes and once from Size Up. But the lion had its way of punishing me still.

The resource haul was gravely less than ideal. I received only five organs from random decks and a whopping nine hides. Bones, on the other hand... I got only four of those when I sorely needed them. Fortunately the total bone count is seven, but I'm anxious if they'll be enough.

Lantern Year 30 - Rivalry

The blame game began whose fault it was that settlement received so few bones.

Hovelina and Tranaree come to blows. Hovelina gets the gaping chest wound, which feels wrong since she has the Manhunter's secret fighting art... oh well. This settlement has been a power trip anyway.

But it turned out I had been screwed over by the resource decks. I did not have enough resources for oxidizing lantern glaive and to complete lantern armor set. I was missing one bone.

Rarely if ever I have used harvest ritual. This time I did, from five resources. And my eyes must have been bulging from their sockets when I drew two monster organs, love juice and two monster hides.

So, another desperate harvest ritual from four remaining non-bone lion resources. What a weird curse this must be because I still didn't draw even a single monster bone - although I did get two ???'s.

1: Harvest ritual from five monster resources.
2: Another harvest ritual from four monster resources.
3-5: A total of two successful battle paints.
6: Oxidized lantern glaive.
7: Bloodletting to relieve Hovelina from emotionlessness.
8: Hovelina drums for some survival.
9-10: Hovelina gets +1 strength from Nightmare Training.
11: Bloodletting for Laifuseuskaja to remove Motion Sickness.
12: Voxanius gets +1 strength from Nightmare Training.
13: Shrine ritual is a success.

Lantern Year 30 showdown: Gold Smoke Knight

Laifuseuskaja, Hovelina, Menoloromias and Tranaree are the chosen champions to save Enerva.

Random terrain picks were Acanthus Plants, Resin Dung Ball and Ore Vein.

Fight starts with Gold Smoke Knight charging at Laifuseuskaja, whom he hits only on 10's. Survivor turn starts nicely with the trap coming up in first four cards. Lucky me I didn't go in blind. Only two wounds were scored, and both came from a single founding stone. Critical location gave Tranaree option to pay eight survival to deal an additional wound.

As is usual, careful management of where survivors stand was key. I was able to make Gold Smoke Knight always target Laifuseuskaja, who was able to surge two deflect tokens and dodge twice thanks to hyper-sensitivity disorder. Nearly every attack Gold Smoke Knight made there were annoyingly one or two lanterns, so it took a heavy toll on Laifuseuskaja's survival. At least he had the manhunter pistol slowly trickling in more of those.

As long as Laifuseuskaja was able to get behind Gold Smoke Knight, he was wounding on 7+ with two dice. Remaining survivors had it a little harder, Hovelina was scoring wounds with 7+ with only a single die and Voxanius on 16+ with two dice. Yeah, he didn't attack that often at least without the extra dice from horripilation. But once he did - when hit location deck had been emptied and there was only the trap left.

Since he had oxidized lantern glaive, a spear and an axe,  he tried to negate the trap.

Nope.

That one resulted in first actual damage level in the match - light injury. Woah.

And that was the only injury level throughout the showdown.

Laifuseuskaja took two hits from Blacken once as Gold Smoke Knight had been lucky with lantern 10's, draining all deflect tokens and dodge actions. But that's it.

It was over.

The aim of this campaign was to break the game and abuse rules and see if game can actually be beaten with its own rules. That Gold Smoke Knight really looked like a tough one. But min/max approach trivialized even the final boss.

The main culprit seemed to be the combination of life-time re-rolls and the Sleeping Virus Flower from Flower Knight. Once you go past a certain threshold of stats, stats seem to start accumulating on that particular survivor since they are able to get into situations where you might get them and pass whatever test they have to make. And then when that survivor finally has to die, well, reset with the already accumulated stats! And get a new re-roll too if you had to use yours already.

First level Manhunter reward is also a major game changer. Such a guaranteed source of a lot of insanity is... insane. That and Crimson Candy innovation give you at least four or five points of survival at start of showdown even if you roll that dreaded "1" in Overwhelming Darkness.

I think I'll make a comparison campaign next with Survival of the Fittest, Graves and Collective Toil and retaining that horribly overpowered "shared re-roll for all in same phase" ruling, but leaving out Flower Knight and Manhunter.

Hilariously enough, this "speed run" settlement took over two years to finish.

Oh well. Here is a re-cap of showdowns for lantern years:

Europa in flames (with family issues)

Episode 8: Rise of Fenris

As nobody had found Tesla, he emerged as a raving lunatic in the last scenario along with Militant Vesna, Patriotic Fenris, Mechanical Togawa and Industrial Albion.

My Fenris team had a slim chance of filling one more line from campaign triump track with Power, Popularity. Enlist, Upgrade and Something. That was the initial plan at least. Even six random event choices didn't give enough of an advantage to rush whatever I needed.

Apparently Tesla and Vesna had some family issues because Tesla attacked Vesna at least four times and however many times Vesna herself attacked Tesla, which translated into around six+ points of popularity and combat victory stars. That was already half of required victory stars to end the game.

Togawa and Albion were struggling in between the overwhelming speed of Fenris and Vesna. And Tesla was hellbent on slowing down Vesna's progress, and as a result Fenris was conquering vast swathes of land for their nefarious purposes.

Unfortunately this was not nearly enough. Vesna would have surpassed popularity track had the rules allowed it, so it was to her benefit to shut down the game before any other player entered the last points bracket of popularity.

Game ended with Vesna having 75 points with all six stars. Fenris had 72 with only two stars. So unfairly close... except that didn't matter much when the remaining points from triumph tracks were added together. Final Rise of Fenris scoreboard:

1. Patriotic Saxonia/Mechanical Saxony/Innovative Saxony/Mechanical Vesna/Innovative Vesna/Militant Vesna/Mechanical Vesna/Militant Vesna: 225pts

2. Mechanical Nordic /Innovative Nordic /Mechanical Nordic/Agricultural Nordic/Mechanical Nordic/Mechanical Fenries/Agricultural Fenris/Patriotic Fenris: 194pts

3. Agricultural Togawa/Industrial Togawa /Industrial Togawa/Patriotic Togawa/Patriotic Togawa/Agricultural Togawa/Militant Togawa/Mechanical Togawa: 158pts

4. Engineering Rusviet/Agricultural Rusviet /Patriotic Rusviet /Industrial Albion/Militant Albion/Engineering Albion/Industrial Albion/Industrial Albion: 142pts

Dirge for Burkstad

Twenty three years of anguish and misery is finally over. Incidentally, it took two years and one thirds of a year to complete.

Lantern Year 22 hunt was against Sunstalker level 2.

We had green savior acting as our evasion tank, and two survivors wounding on 3+ and bow survivor critting on 6+, so we had rather decent chances I would say - considering how terribly Burkstad has fared over their course of existence.

First hunt space 63, Feet. Fortunately we had one survivor with no insanity, so it wasn't a total party kill, but almost. The three extra events caused us to lose two survivors to the Gambler.

It's been almost four months since we had our last game, and game set-up had taken longer than our game until that point. That was a little too harsh, so we ended up fudging the results into severe injury rolls, which were adequately punishing - broken leg and dismembered leg. Our entire hunt party was now movement 4 or below.

Hunt phase also offered us extra disorders - and our legless evasion tank with Rawhide armor got Ghostly Beauty.

Actual showdown started rather nicely, despite our troubles with movement. First and second round gave four and three wounds in to the Sunstalker. We probably could have gotten in a few more if it wasn't for annoyances from ambient lightening - sun was shining always from the wrong direction.

Around third turn, however, our evasion tank fell to mortal terror brain trauma. The savior wasn't able to utter Dormenatus even once.

Then the game started to quickly fall apart. Next one to go was our death mask wearing bow user, thanks to him being in shadow when he shouldn't have.

Purvina and Mortis still tried their best, but Purvina couldn't take two Vomit Kaleidoscopes in a row, and Mortis wasn't able to stand the incoming heat from solar track. Heroic efforts only amounted to just over half of Sunstalker's AI deck converted into wounds.

Along with the survivors we lost: Rawhide boots, 2x founding stone, monster grease, stone noses, white lion coat, lantern halberd and death mask.

Lantern year 23 had Butcher on the timeline, but since our campaign had been desperate crawling right from the start, I thought it best to permit triggering The Watcher now. Well, I also thought we'd have better chances against The Watcher than Butcher level 3...

And we certainly did wounds in to the cosmic devourer! Three, in fact.

Three, that The Watcher healed many, many, many times over.

We had lost two survivors on the first round.

The remaining survivors stood for a bit longer, but that was mostly because of The Watcher not being so interested over knocked down survivors.

Last survivor to live wielded the Whisker Harp. At this point, the game was more about if Mawilina would get the melody going successfully even once.

And a turn before she died, she did. Despite around her seven -1 strength tokens. Still enough strength left to strum a harp!

Burkstad goes down in style, with a single note that was played in tune.

Phew.

Burkstad was a unique settlement in many ways.

There were many times when the settlement hanged on the verge of oblivion, but somehow it always managed to cling to life. Death count illustrates this point quite well: we lost 39 survivors in total, plus six saviors who vanished. There's two records here, on highest death and savior count.

Also, it was probably a record-holder for innovations lost to Gorm Climate.

And we hunted Screaming Antelope only once!

Let's do a little re-cap.

-Prologue was one of the toughest so far.
-White Lion year 1 made a total party wipe.
- Year 2 lion and year 3 gorm went fine.
- Loss of equipment and resources to year 4 Butcher, who was thwarted by luring it to the darkness.
- Year 5 lion is a smashing success with only Rib Blade and 3x fist & tooth!
- Year 6 Flower Knight is a struggle.
- Year 7 Gorm explodes the heads of two survivors on the second turn. And still survivors somehow win.
- Year 8 Antelope goes well.
- Year 9 King's Man is a disaster.
- Year 10 White Lion and year 11 Gorm do good enough.
- Year 12 Flower Knight level 2 is barely a victory.
-Year 13 The Hand applauses people dead.
-Year 14 Sunstalker level 1 is a difficult victory, but another Sunstalker next year is an easy one.
-Year 16 Butcher level 2 we manage to bring down to one AI card remaining.
-Year 17 and 18 White Lion level 2's aren't much of a trouble, but yeah... it's year 17 & 18.
-Year 19 King's Man level 2 is brought down to one AI card remaining.
-Year 20 Phoenix level 1 gives Hour's Ring that is immediately scrapped the next hunt phase...
-Year 21 Gorm level 2 is scary but manageable.
-Year 22 Sunstalker level 2 is a total party wipe.
-Year 23 Watcher is a total settlement wipe.

Kalmana Retreat over

Lantern Year 29 - Lonely Tree level 3

Before the hunt begins, Ranneta Massu feels a little hungy. His surname means belly after all. He eats the Lonely Fruit and soon enough a threatening tree has grown in his place.

My initial plans was to have an Ageless savior until I checked the Ageless rule, which disallows saviors from utilizing it. Oh well, perhaps Cardani shall eat it right before Gold Smoke Knight for the +1 evasion if first attempt with Hours Ring fails.

Cardani leads Anetarias, Danazama and Anarda to fell a tree.

Showdown is a slow grind with Anetarias eyeballing the best hit locations for Cardani, and Danizama was continuously checking the upcoming AI cards so I'd know how I should be positioned before the end of survivor turn.

When the tree would attack next, Cardani would surge a Gaxe attack and use her action to deflect with Oxidized Beacon Shield. When tree would not attack, she used both actions for attacks.

Showdown lasted ten turns, so Cardani averaged two wounds per turn.

The tree is a curious showdown where you're tip-toeing amidst the feeling of imminent threat. You have to be extra cautious throughout the fight, as godlike evasion doesn't protect you from those fruits.

But it was a relatively easy victory. Cardani took one explosion from a fruit, but she is Immortal and has Blotted Out so she just took a bleed token from it. Sharing a stew made from the quickly rotting fruits of the tree, the whole party gained total control of their hair. No longer bad hair days for any of them. Cardani also ate the Porous Flesh Fruit, gaining Nightmare Membrane ability.

The two random resources survivors got from the fight were Love Juice and Monster Hide, out of which Love Juice was put to immediate use. To replace the hole in their heart, the parents of Ranneta Massu have Madra Massu as a result of a moment of intimacy.

I had left some endeavors unused before this whole affair was put into motion. All endeavors throughout the year were:

1 Ouglu learns Rhythm Chaser
2 Cooking for Venison Oco Busco.
3 Binge eating cured from Stapuranocans via Bloodletting.
4 Stapuranocanss
5 Cardani drums for insanity
6 Cardani drums for insanity
7 Cardani learns Rhythm Chaser
8 Shrine ritual is a success (spent on Lonely Tree)
9 Enewarbabolactylohn

Lantern Year 29 - Flower Knight level 3

As Kalmana Retreat is pretty much as prepared for Gold Smoke Knight as they can be, the last hunt is entirely for fresh faces. Inspired by the fight with Lonely Tree, Zamarias feels the desire to hunt again - perhaps the first time since Lantern Year 5. He gathers the "heroes" of last fight, Anarda and Danazama, and also takes Werinoca Gnotti along with them.

The group braved a bone storm, ran across lava river and Danazama extinguished her own lantern by accident. Werinoca and Anarda are struck by a frozen lighting, which brings Anarda right to heavy body injury. The expedition by Zamarias certainly isn't fortune's favorite. '

Then they are greeted by a stone rain, and after forcing their way through spiky forest gates, it starts raining sticky droplets. Four times different elements have fallen from the sky during this hunt, so I guess Zamarias didn't check the weather report before starting this journey. During forest gates Zamarias takes a disorder to get rid of Prima Donna. The replacing disorder was Enfeebled.

Then there is choking heat before showdown begins. And Flower Knight continues its long tradition of picking the weakest target with random Bloom on turn 1. And I have played Flower Knight incorrectly all these years. As it says that you are doomed until the end of monster turn, you can't dash. And since there is no survival opportunity after AI card, that matters little anyway. Suddenly level 3 Flower Knight looks far more menacing than before... as it used Bladed Kick to remove Danazama from the showdown right on turn 1.

Cardani has clearly imbued the Gaxe with special properties, as even Zamarias was quite adept with it. Well, let's not mention where he was wounding on 2+ with a reroll, and on two occasions failed to deliver the blow.

Zamarias was taking the hits with Oxidized Beacon Shield, but even this was not secure enough - perfect strike from Flower Knight rapidly ate through Zamarias' armor, making even a single hit from the Knight a threat. He was doing well enough, but survival was becoming a scarce resource.

Anarda tried to help here and there hitting with a beacon shield, but mostly her contribution was to trigger trap once. She broke her leg, and being adjacent to Zamarias who was at light injury level at brains had to take a brain trauma. He got danger seizures and replaced Enfeebled with Shallow Lungs. Fortunately Zamarias hit a location on Anarda that still had armor points on.

Had it not been for various showdown events, Zamarias would have ran out of survival. However, two Breakthroughs and a critical location kept him going until he struck Flower Knight dead. Hooray, party of mediocre survivors! You did it!

Lantern Year 30 - Hunt Re-enactment

Cardani Masvar and Ardanet Sagasu play out the pivotal battle against the Watcher, both gaining Fated ability. So they perform better against Watcher the next time they fight one.

Then comes the insanity that is the carefully planned settlement phase of year 30 with underground harvest and eight endeavors.

First, however, Ardanet retrieves the vampiric artichoke from Black Harvest. Ardanet was not Fated for Watcher after all, since he died on the farm. Flopura retrieves the encased Century Greaves and uses the scell resource to succeed automatically.

Settlement cooks up Venison Oco Busco, and then gathers to pray at the shrine ritual. Someone cracks a stupid joke, and Enewarbabolacthylohn has to cancel that effect and re-roll the result.

To much of my horror I realize Kalmana Retreat doesn't have the necessary Iron to oxidize beacon shield. And not enough scraps to make iron either.

Zamarias, the last survivor from the original four who founded Kalmana Retreat, makes use of his bone blade with grim determination. First, he sacrifices Vararda to no avail. Second, he sacrifices his own son Zamalne in an attempt to appease to powers that be. This gives departing survivors some insanity, but not what he's after.

Then, when the bone blade struck Masneta, he gained what the settlement most needed: a broken lantern.

Then settlement tries Scrap Smelting, but botch the attempt horrendously and Enewarbabolactylohno has to come and save the process. Earlier, shrine ritual had also failed miserably and she had had to come and intervene.

Finally, the settlement is able to oxidize another beacon shield.  And then Kalmana Retreat is out of endeavors.

Lantern Year 30 showdown - Gold Smoke Knight level 1

Cardani and Ouglu consume Elytra. Ouglu also consumes the Hunter's Heart to gain some extra strength.

Stapuranocanss and Danalne the green savior join the team.

If we consider accuracy of 2+, Cardani is hit only on 10+ as long as she doesn't get knocked down, after which it drops to 9+. Ouglu is hit on 8+ (leyline walker and rolling armor) and has Ripple Pattern with +2 to its roll. Danalne is hit on 10+ (tool belt, flower knight badge) but she is mostly just a support character. Stapuranocanss is hit on 5+, so he is the weakest link on this at least.

Alright. Let's start.

Gold Smoke Knight gives a lazy start when it attacks with accuracy 6+ attack with frustration. Cardani surged a deflect block and no hits went through even with 5x 6+ attacks, 5x 2+ attacks and 3 automatic hits.

Cardani attacks the knight and scores two wounds. Danalne discovers there's a trap coming up. I device a cunning plan - walk Ouglu nearby, make an aimed bow attack and get knockback 7 as a result and then do another aimed attack, triggering the trap.

Well, Ouglu's attack was critical damage which somehow dismembered his leg. No knockback, not being able to dash any longer. Danalne shuffled the hit locations a little bit again, and Ouglu instead surged another attack against a parry location, which just gave him flee brain trauma.

Next, Gold Smoke Knight deals a strength 10 damage attack everywhere on the board, and some extra against Cardani. I decide not to surge deflections, since she already had one deflect token from earlier beacon shield. This had her survive Blacken again with no damage. However, beginning turn 2 she is already down five points of survival.

Danalne shuffles the hit location deck a bit again, and Cardani activates to use deflect with oxidized beacon shield. Then Ouglu walks as far from Gold Smoke Knight as possible and aims a shot against a first strike location that gives basic action if you surged the attack. One wound, hooray. Next, the surged attack triggers trap, which scores no hits to Cardani.

Deck is re-shuffled, and Danalne activates to check four trampling locations in a row.

Cardani deals one wound with a Failure reaction.

Tactics was Attack Pattern, so Stapuranocanss was next in line with +4 strength in attacks. He charges into Gold Smoke Knight's blind spot, and scores two hits. One failure and one wound reaction. I try the wound reaction first, and with the horripilation dice even the meager abilities of the club master give a wound in. But this triggers the ramming reaction and carves through most of Stapuranocanss' armor. Worth it? I have no idea. With Sour Death he encourages himself up and surges for Rawhide Headband, revealing next in line to be Indiscriminate Smash.

Danalne has to dash closer to lure Gold Smoke Knight away from Stapuranocanss.

Two rounds with three wounds to the monster in each. Looking good.

First attack with Indiscriminate Smash deals no hits. Then, the secondary attack is directed at Ouglu, whose ripple pattern screws him over by canceling the one hit - triggering frustration. Which eats up both of his dodges, and then Blacken comes with three. One is prevented by Ripple Pattern.

Ouglu opens the survivor turn by making a daring, nearly blind shot against Gold Smoke Knight. He makes four attack rolls, and all hit. Impervious location fails to knock down the monster. However. Ouglu does succeed to make one critical wound. I don't know what games the Gold Smoke Knight plays, but it's turn three and Ouglu has shot both of his legs off! He does two wounds, though.

Danalne reveals that there is trap coming... again...

Cardani deals two wounds first, and then Danalne surges for a look at hit locations. Cardani deals three wounds more with the help of a critical. Seven points of damage in total. Albeit with a legless archer.

Turn four Scorching Charge passes over Ouglu, leaving him at one point of armor in body location. Because of rolling armor bonus, the knockdown effect becomes a knockback effect.

Ouglu shoots in one wound, and then fishes out the trap.

Trap pulls Cardani and Ouglu closer, and now Cardani is within range of walking to attack the knight. Danalne arranges hit locations.

First attack with Gaxe deals four wounds and triggers See the Truth for Ouglu. Now he's lost one of his eyes, too. Danalne surges with Necromancer's Eye.

Cardani surges an attack and kills the Gold Smoke Knight.

Victory!

Well, it was not a pure win. Cardani had received a total of 6 strength and 1 luck from homebrew material - three points with Salt gained outside of fight with the Sunstalker, one from a hunt event and perhaps around two from re-rolls at Age tables. She may have gained a point of accuracy and a point of evasion from those, too, and the +1 luck came from a hunt event that sacrificed a party member for a permanent +1 stat.

But strength +14 were from legitimate sources. Had that been the case, she would have eaten the Hunter's Heart to bring her up to 17, which would have still had her wound Gold Smoke Knight on 5+ with two dice and with a re-roll on failed wound once per attack.

Showdown would have probably taken a little longer as Ouglu would've had harder time wounding the monster.

Then starts the old version of Exhausted Lantern Hoard. I'm not going into details for these lantern years any longer, as they're but fights. Some more exciting than another

Lantern Year 31 - Phoenix level 3 with extra +1 speed, +1 dmg

Lantern Year 32 - Gorm level 3 with extra +2 speed, +2 dmg.

Lantern Year 33 - Flower Knight level 3 with extra +3 speed, +3 dmg

Danalne the green savior disappears after this fight and is replaced with Werinoca Gnotti.

Lantern Year 34 - Dung Beetle Knight level 3 with extra +4 speed, +4 dmg

Here I decide to ditch most armor sets, since the damage is going to go through any and all armor anyway. Also, Cardani had gained Fencing on top of Rhythm Chaser last year, so she needed extra evasion.

Lantern Year 35- Lion God level 3 with extra +5 speed, +5 dmg

I honestly thought it would end here. Turns out there are not that many "draw another relentless" AI cards in the deck. Stapuranocanss retired and suffered broken back in this fight, so from now on it's just Cardani. Fortunately Feral Tyrant card had Cardani lose all Insanity points, so Screaming Antelope can be done next.

Lantern Year 36 - Screaming Antelope level 3 with extra +6 speed, +6 dmg.

From this point on a new round of quarries would take place. However, by now it was apparent that Cardani was mechanically broken and would not die unless a monster attack included multiple lantern 10's, and then rolling badly in a severe injure table. This coupled with the fact that I had the Hours Ring, which essentially was a one-time proof against the death of Cardani.

All in all, I did not realize Cardani was that broken survivor. But she could not have done it without continuous use of Rawhide Headband and especially Necromancer's Eye. But when you wound on 2+ and can re-roll it, turn any permanent injuries into critical injuries, and are hit only on 10+ and can dodge twice and have two deflect tokens and don't gain hunt experience... you pretty much have to be afraid of only automatic damage and unavoidable reactions.

Kalmana Retreat over.

All of the above have unbroken lineage from the previous settlement, Kalmana Deluge. Below are original people of Kalmana Retreat.

Cardani Masvar, the binge-eating former cannibal, reborn.
- Braved the Storm in the very first lantern year, but was blinded as a result. Later on her new body, this eye has healed. But when he saw the truth inside of her skull, she plucked the eye out again.
- Was "blessed" by the Cleaner Birds during hunt for Gorm. Then she encountered Flesh Monolith, and during Unnatural Hunger she was one of the survivors who ate Mesul. Then, back in the settlement, she took what was left of Mesul and showed everyone how beneficial it is to eat corpses, and not disgusting at all.

- After coming back from the dead she has shown far less tendencies to feast on human flesh.
- Defended settlement from The Hand, and her efforts were so valiant that The Hand's thunderous applause nearly killed her - if it wasn't for the intervention of Newarbabolac, she'd have died.

Surastus, a banished survivor who tinkered with lanterns and got disfigured. Before departing, suppose she was the "old crone" that offered Sleeping Virus Flower for Cardani. She's revisited her settlement, and caused Cardani to murder Nengar. Scarred Kalnetan's eyes.
